The cleverest marketing people on the planet are obviously you and me,
because that’s who Apple use to do their marketing-

Its strange how some people see some of the most beautifully sculpted objects,
    containing really useful applications,
presented with an interface of unsurpassed intuitiveness and simplicity,
and the only word they can use to describe it’s success is ‘hype’.

The ipod and its interface didn’t exist a few short years ago,
it is an original product, and a modern Icon, in my opinion.
It is a triumph of design, and an obvious example of good design selling a product-
For such a ubiquitous item, I don’t see it being marketed to the extent of homeowner loans,
    or soap powder, or Budweiser-

Rather, if someone wants a gadget with this functionality,
chances are, they’ll make their own decision-
and more often than not, it will be an ipod-

Only a matter of time I’d say.

On the batteries I have a Nano (2G) and I’m not sure it even uses batteries. The indicator seldom drops below full. It’s great for listening to “Morning Ireland” podcasts when I am in the gym. (I’ve got to keep up with the news back home some how.)

Again nothing really new there… 3rd generation phones can do this… plus the ability to make video calls, which it appears the iPhone can’t do!?!

Not sure what all the fuss is about to be honest. Sure it’s a cool gadget and of course they’ll sell millions. But there are already numerous devices like this on the market, and even my SE k800i does most of what this can do..and is a helluva lot smaller by the looks of it.

I think the advantage this device has over the others of course is that it is backed by probably the cleverest marketing people on the planet. If ya wanna make something sell these days..stick an “i” before the name (not after it like mine..hehehe).

I totally agree with you there Rob… nothing special about it, that’s not already out there. My SE W550i is a lot smaller and does most of that… ok it doesn’t have the dramatic display (which is a novelty IMO)… but Id sacrafice that for the portability and size of a normal phone. And even if Apple do release a nano version, it’s going to have to lose it’s screen size, thus reducing the impact of the display and touchscreen usability…

I just think they got it wrong with the size… it’s PDA size but not a PDA… if it had more technology in it and availed of OS X a bit more by allowing it to work with some document formats it might be of benifit. Being Apple it most likely will never be able to sync with an MS Exchange server, a great benifit for PDA’s.

    LMAO!!! Revolutionary!?

But… it will probably sell millions… as it’s of the ‘i’ gen. :/

I agree about it being a modern Icon.. and I don’t think I or anyone else for that matter would suggest the “only” reason for it’s success is hype. But if you think it isn’t a major reason then think again. I am sure that most of the mums and dads who go out to buy an ipod for their kids are not musing on the intricate design and functionality aspects of the latest Ipod. They are thinking.. MP3 player = ipod just as people of yesteryear..and it isn’t that long ago equated Mobile music player with Walkman (remember that particular icon?). I can’t count how many people I have spoken to who said they had bought their kids an “ipod” only to discover that it was a Creative Zen or a Samsung or whatever.

And nope..I don’t own an ipod..or any other Apple product for that matter. If I saw it as the best value for money best all round music player/picture viewer I would most likely own one.

I still believe that Apple are very clever at marketing…and ipods are seen as fashion accessories by a lot of the people who buy them….

I’m not having a go at those people or Apple… just saying it how I see it

and I’m probably just as bad…I want a Nikon cos I think they are the coolest looking cameras….

I Have to disagree. the coolest thing about it is the thought that has gone into the design

Sure there are tons of similar devices available

    like your K750

but have a watch of the webcast on the apple site of the presentation

They actually acknowledge that there are loads of devices. but most of them are not great at any of the functions

what apple are saying it they have made it nice to use etc

for example the touch technology they have developed thats really accurate. until you use that sort of stuff you will never know how good it is.

would of been nice to have a cardslot though

    :( :( :(

the big selling point of most apple products is the clever design. thats one of the big reasons behind the ipod success, i can give it to my mum and she knows how it works. give her the creative one and she struggles

same with this device, its got really clever stuff in it, but looks very easy to use

thats why people like macs, solid reliable and a OS that seems very simple, hey it used to even smile at you when it was booting up

Well I’ll take your word for it Steve. As I said..I don’t own one because I just don’t think that they are worth the extra bucks that they always seem to cost. :D

Never had a problem using any of the other Music Players I own. Though I’ve heard that claim many times about how easy Apple computers are to use….but the funny thing is..and I swear this is true. My boss here at work bought one last year and had it for months but could only manage the most basic operations on it and was forever asking me to do stuff on it for him. It took me a lot longer to figure stuff out on it too as I’d never used one. So in the end he ended up buying a Windows based laptop. So he is one person who didn’t think it was all that intuitive…. he’s been using the Windows based laptop with little or no problems since. Of course everything else in the place is Windows based so I know that is why he found the replacement easier to use..but still…

Some one in work just asked me have I seen the new phone from Apple…

Me: “Yeah I’ve seen it… looks nice”

Other: “Aw I have to get one… it would be so cool”

Me: “Yeah I won’t be getting one myself but it does look good!”

Other: “What does it look like?”

    Me: “…………”

Apple TV has nothing to do with the iPhone as far as I can tell from the web site. It is a box that acts as an interface between your iTunes on your PC/Mac and your TV so you can download movies and watch them on your TV instead of on your PC/MAC/iPod. Some other devices will do the same (such as a future version of Tivo here in the US) but Apple do have a way of doing things in a nice way which helps them win.

By the way…I was an Ipod mini plonker…why should I buy a product if I have to replace the battery after a few months when charging it does vilch to the battery life. Next time I get an mp3 player, I’ll defo get one that’s charged by AA batteries or AAA.

    The Pavlovian response has started…

I’m drooling just looking at that thing, it is so being bought.

Somewhat of an apple addiction in my family, we’ve had an apple of some shape or form since 1986. At the moment, I own 4 ipods, a powerbook g4, my mum has the mac mini and my sister has the second gen imac. Can’t get enough of mac.

I would agree that quality control has gone to pot with their ipods, but in my opinion, Apple are not used to having this much market share, and are pumping ipods out at a rate of knots. And quality control is obviously suffering Jobs unsatiable demand for market share. Quality was one of Apple’s main selling points for years, we had an Apple Stylewriter 1200 (Bubblejet) working in the office for ten years, and we had to retire it last year, but it nver broke, never once refused to print. Sure, bits fell off it and made weird noises, but it just kept going.

They would want to be very careful with this product, as it could kill them off very quick. Hope it dosen’t, and I wish I had stock in Apple.

apple are no longer a computer company.

they announced this in the same keynote. they are now, Apple inc

but this has been coming for some time, apple are aiming to be and are becoming a consumer electronics company

they are aiming for 1% market share of the mobile phone market in 2008, thats like 10 million units, they have only sold somethign like 100K ipods since 2001, so jeez the phone market is huge, just imagine how many phones nokia are selling!!!

    more like since last weekend-

This thread seems to provoke the same kind of emotive response as the film/digital, Nikon/Canon, Mac/pc ‘debates’-

Commiserations to anyone who bought the mini,
but it always looked second best to me anyway-

    As for this phone,
it looks like its not gonna be become available for the forseeable future, even in the US-
And I reckon I won’t be an early adopter of this one myself anyway-
I’ll wait and see how it develops.

Any new player in an industry has got to welcomed, it promotes more competition,
and ultimately (and simplisticlally) the customer should benefit from improved and less expensive products, and more choice.

I’m with you. I bought a very early iPod back in the day and even getting protective cases for it proved more difficult in recent years. If I was to upgrade my phone to this one I’d wait a while for things to settle down and for the price to come more into my range.
