Well I’ve had a look at these so I should at least give you my thoughts!

1: Just too many elements competing for attention, shame about the huge crane… draws my eye to the moon (is it a moon shot? crane shot? steeple shot? townscape shot?… can’t decide!) Cluttered in bottom right corner (fence, bridge, more cranes)

2: Nice composition, good interest with the light on the water… leads the eye up to… well… a bunch of buildings…! So again my eye loses interest and goes back to look at the water once more, before moving on!

3: Again, crane and partly hidden spire kind of take away from this shot if you ask me.

4: Too much ‘uninteresting’ space at the bottom of the pic… can see what you might have been trying to do with the composition. Simpler idea with less elements in the shot, but still rather confusing with tree just off-centre, partially obscured glass building, lamp post, parts of other buildings on the sides of the shot… again not sure what you’re showing us.

Feel free to disagree completely of course! Just my first thoughts as I looked at them. Technically good, but they don’t ‘speak’ to me if that makes sense! E.g. cropping #1 so you lose the spire on left and bridge/fence/cranes on right makes a stronger composition the way I see it, but then it’s only of a crane and the moon!

    Cheers Dave….!

I agree they are cluttered… in essence what I was trying to capture in them was a contrast between old and new… the new being the glass and render and the old being the stone of the steeple and exitsing buildings incorporated into the shopping centre… while i am a fan of modern/contemporary architecture I am by no means a fan of Scotch Hall… Douglas Wallace (the architects) do interiors very well but as for exteriors… well cluttered and mixed bag are 2 phrases that come to mind…. so maybe the building itself contributes to the clutteredness…! Their use of couloured light is sort of nice and again this is another aspect i was trying to capture. To be honest I am not the biggest fan of cropping and prefer to crop in the viewfinder. This leads to situations where including objects (like cranes etc) cannot be avoided..! Weird I know but thats the way I work…! It comes from having done Architectural shoots where I may have cropped an image for compostional reasons and then the client asks for a large print of it and it cant happen as I have cropped so much…! I do agree with you generally all the same…!

    Thanks for the comments

    Richie
