I know in real world use such technical examinations don’t matter too much especially with cropped sensors but how can Canon justify the price difference over the Sigma if these results are for real

    Canon 24-70 L

    Sigma 24-70 EX DG

    Because they can.
If they put a €250 price tag on it, people would think something has been cut out or reduced in quality.
Even the review refers to the canon lens as being a “professional lens”, it then even shows the CA’s and the Field Curvature to be worse on the Canon but still gives a higher Optical Rating than the Sigma. Whats that about like?

i have used both of those

i had the sigma for a month before i sold it, i hated it with a passion

the zoom and focus rings are back to front from normal, i just couldnt get on with it at all

the canon i reckon produces much nicer images

Simple. You pay for quality control and reliability. Not saying Sigma is an unreliable brand, but why else do you think Nikon, Canon, Leica, etc. cost more. Computer aided lens design long ago levelled the playing field, as regards optical quality, but all the optical quality in the world is for nought, unless you can get a good copy of the lens. Even then, I believe the sample rate in quality control is only something like 1 in every batch with Nikon and Canon, so what do you think it might be for a company selling for even less..

Aside from the above, the price premium often buys you better build quality frequently, as well as better service. You do pay a premium just because it says Canon or Nikon on it, but not all that premium is just for the lettering and box..

EDIT: by the way, all the usual disclaimer apply to photozone tests, for example how do you know Claus’s tested sample of each is the best..

I have used both Sigma and Canon L – the consistency of build quiality and the quality of teh results are often significant. Having said that, there is a reason why Sigma can charge a premium for its lenses at its top range – quality of results.
