I went down to my local park today to escape the heat, with camera of course. I took a few photos, any c&c would be great.

LIKE THEM ALL MARTIN. 1 AND 2 MY FAVORITES. LOVE THE SIMPLE COMPOSITION OF THE POND SKATER. WHAT LENS DID YOU USE?

They’re all fantastic and #1 especially appeals to me because I’m fairly sure that is a very hard shot to execute right.

    Thanks guys.
Yes number #1 is a shot I tried to get before but failed. I had better light this time.
They skate pretty fast but rest for a couple of seconds, my autofocus tends to get confused by the surface so manual is better.
I took many shots to get this and was lucky that another skater made a ripple nearby, otherwise it would not have been interesting.

Padraig, I used a 135mm F2, it is an amazing lens, the best talent money can buy. The in-focus part is really sharp and the out-of-focus (bokeh) is really smooth (as in #3), and the colours are strong.
The depth of field is tiny, when shot wide open, so it takes a bit of learning. I don’t miss zooming, its one less thing to think about when composing. The only processing on 1-4 was a contrast curve, noise reduction and sharpening, 5 also has a vignette to tone down the mucky water. Great lens.

Three and four for me Martin, but a terrific set. Might be nice
to post images just a little larger though…

I agree – a great set. i particularly like #3 – the combination of the shape and focus of the web, the sharp spider and the soft background. I agree with Rob, it would be nicer to see them larger.

Thanks Rob & Will, I’ll try to figure out a way to post larger next time.
I usually upload to flickr at longest side 1024px. This is a bit big for PI but flickr’s next smallest size is 500px. If I upload at 800px to flickr them its slideshow feature wouldn’t be so good. Maybe I’ll find somewhere to host 800px photos.

In the meantime if you are interested this is the full set, at 1024px. Its a flickr slideshow of 9 photos.

(not that you have to look at it, I don’t like people suggesting I go to another website either)

    Cheers,

    Martin
