Recently got a 2nd hand copy of Simon Marsdens out of print book “In Ruins, the once great houses of Ireland” This book is all photographed in Infrared. Decided to have a go at photographing a once great house my self:-)

Let me know what you think especially about the first three which is your favorite of these if you like them at all?

    Athcarne Castle, Co. Meath
This sombre 16th-century ruin lies only 6 miles from the site of the Battle of the Boyne. People have told of hearing the cries of dying soldiers, the manifestations of a soldier hanged from a great oak tree in the grounds have been seen, and the spectre and demented face of a young girl, whose hands are dripping with blood, was witnessed by a labourer a few years ago.

That’s a great book, quite learned, with lovely drawings too-
    and beautifully designed and printed-

If its the same one I’m thinking of-
I saw one about 5 years ago, I think-

    Good choice of views here-
you’ll be able to mark them from the replies-

My vote is for number 2-
but I’ll need to be able to see inside the windows

Great shots Martin, Simon Marsdens work is awesome!!

I like the position of the house in the first shot but the sky is more dramitic in the second, love the tree in the third, wouldn’t mind seeing a shot of the tree on its own.
    Overall id say the second.

i love the first three. agree with above, like the position in first pic but clouds are more dramatic in second. i like the third because the lane draws me straight into the middle of the picture but the house is almost incidental to the whole scene. brilliant work :)

Number one for me Martin. Contrast levels are just a little severe
in two and three for my tastes. Must check that book out, see if I have
    access to a copy…

These are great Martin – adding to the concensus, the top one seems to be the most balanced.

It’s follow the herd time. #1 & #4 float my boat. I agree with Rob on the contrasty finish on #2 & #3. Even though the verticals are all over the place in #4 it does capture my attention long enough to like it.

No. 4 for me, the converging lines actually make it, nice one Martin.

I love Simon Marsden’s work, one of my favourite photographers.

1st shot for me too. I also like the 3rd shot but the fuzzy cloud leads me away from the main focal point.
    Excellent shots overall

Number 1 for me by a nose. I like the tree but I’m not sure if it fights with the house for attention. Great shots all round though. Did you use a filter or do you have a converted camera?

Thanks for the feedback folks much appreciated. Still cant work out which one i like best:-) I would like to take the best from all three. Its good though that you all have different favorites. Good to see some of you liked the 4th one i just put it in for a bit of an experiment to see what people thought

Joseph: Not sure if this is the same book. Marsden has a few books so it might one of the other ones. This one has no pencil drawings just text and IR shots. I’m happy with the view point i took. Dont think i have nailed the composition though. Its a hard castle to photograph correctly as there are lots of bushes and things restricting some of the perspectives

Sinead: Glad you liked it. Marsdens work is very good. He has a good few books and DVD’s worth getting

Rob, Alan: Cheers for the feedback on the contrast might step it back a bit

Peter: Thanks for taking a look and for the feedback. Good to meet someone at last who shots infrared also, i thought i was the only one:-)

latchiko: No filters used, I use a polorizer sometimes. This is an Infrared converted camera. You can get the same effect from an R72 filter also just that you will need to use a tripod as the exposure times can be in the seconds. Did you get any good shots in Poland? You should post a few

    Thanks again all

    M

PS: Two more shots, slightly different perspective
