Attempted macro of a pretty fly

Not quite up to Noely’s amazing standard but not bad with ye olde Sigma 70-300mm APO. Bit too much unsharp mask perhaps?

Did ya use flash? The colours seem very harsh

    Cool, pretty fly indeed.
It seems that the fly is in “3D”, is it because of the unsharp mask?
And as Noely says, the light is a bit too strong, it shines around.
    Well done anyway.

yeah i used pop up flash and mirror lock up to try and get it as sharp as possible, probably should have reduced flash compensation a little, or invested in that lovely macro ring flash :D someday….*sigh*

First one in particular is pretty impressive Sancho!! I’ve just invested in that lens myself, although I haven’t really explored it’s macro capabilities yet.

Is this a heavy crop or pretty much out of the camera?

You got prety close up on that one. It’s lovely and sharp, not sure if it is too sharp or not though.

As a follow up to Expresbro’s question; what is the reproduction ratio of that lens?

tis 1:2, pretty good actually. There’s a fairly large crop on the shot yeah but it’s still fairly sharp. I know it’s not up to a full on macro lens quality but for ?199 it’s damn impressive. closest focusing distance is .95 metres which sounds like loads but with 300mm it’s nice. I’d certainly recommend it for someone looking for a telephoto on a budget. I also found while playing around that if you put your standard 18-55 lens on backwards it becomes pretty much a macro lens, depth of field is VERY narrow though.
