francescoParticipant
I’m a victim of a scam that originated here, so I thought I could give you all a little piece of advice.
I was stupid and I should’ve had known better, I can’t stop blaming myself for this. Anyway, the positive side is that I “lost” just a small 2nd hand flash (worth 150€) and not something more valuable.
Long story short, I was contacted via PM by a “gentleman” from the UK who expressed his interest in purchasing my flash for his son in Nigeria: that should’ve alerted me but I guess I was in a good mood and didn’t want to suspect something was going on.
There was an e-mail exchange, with some forged bank receipts from the buyer, and this morning I sent my parcel to the address that he told me.
So, if you come across someone from Nigeria who wants to buy something from you and gives you a Nigerian address, be VERY careful.I feel so stupid, I’ve been online for almost 15 years and nothing like this never happened to me…can’t believe I fell into the trap.
shutterbugParticipantfrancescoParticipantMarkKeymasterSorry to hear that!
There were a couple of new accounts here in the past 2 days which some members notified me off,
which I subsequently deleted… I assume that one of them was the person who pm’d you?francescoParticipantThe only one who should be (and is) sorry is me, Mark! It’s no one’s fault but me. And yes, it was from an account that was deleted.
MarkKeymasterThe only positive that can come from it I guess it that others may learn from your bad experience.
If in the future, anyone else here is doubtful of a transaction, feel free to contact me and I’ll be able to
look into the persons IP address etc… might help, might not…Meanwhile, I’ll think about adding some guidance to the rules…
shutterbugParticipantA bad experience for you, but thankyou for making others aware of it, we all need
to be vigilant to this sort of occurance and thankfully they are few and far between!crampParticipantI got a PM today from a Luare.**** same scam fortunatly I am aware of this scam and more complicated ones /// Seller beware
jahernParticipantGot something similar, seemed like an automated PM asking me if the items were still for sale and would I be able to send them overseas. Sender was a new member just a day old. Just ignored it. Now I see the user is no longer registered.
damien.murphyParticipantGot the same email as Cramp, and reported it to Mark & co. Sorry to hear you got caught Francesco, but I guess better you got caught now for a manageable loss, than at another time when your exposure might have been greater I guess.
It seems PI has been targeted by some spammers and scammers in the last week or two unfortunately, and loathe as I am to suggest it, perhaps some form of number code verification to post might be a good idea, with perhaps some sort of probation period for new users/ some sort of limits for new users in the case of the above PM scam. It is a sad day where such is considered necessary though.

iTomParticipantI got a PM from the same man on Sunday looking to buy my event printer for his son.
I mailed him back and told him that buyer must collect but he still wanted my bank details so he could lodge the money and I post the printer.
Yee know the size of a IT5000 and printer it would cost a pack to post.
I smelt a big rat straight away.My advice if selling meet in person or check out seller that has a good feedback from his posts.
I still have this guy’s email if I should post it up so no one else will fall for his SCAM.
Tom…..PaddysnapperParticipantAnother one here! 2 attacks via pm. 1st one I have answered on thread, I still have a note of e-mail address if required Mark!
2nd approach was a request to ship to a “store” in Nigeria. I wiped the message, and made no response.miki gParticipantJust a suggestion as there seems to be a lot of this activity around.
If buyer & seller had to go through the administrators of the site when buying/selling expensive equipment giving their details. This would be a deterrent to possible scam artists as they would know they can be tracked.MarkKeymasterIf any of these spammers still exist as members, please pm me (check first though :) ).
I’m going to chance the rules on selling to say that all offers must be made in the forum and
any offers which are made via pm only should be considered invalid by the seller. If an offer
is accepted then pm’s can be used to finalise the deal. This may help identify up front any
dodgy dealings. At the end of the day, people have to keep their wits about them etc…
constantineParticipantSorry to hear that, goes to show you have to be on your guard the whole time…
