Has anyone on here attempted on a clear day to shoot aircraft passing overhead.

I am thinking of trying this and using my 500L or my 800L to get the distance and sharpness.

The effect I am trying to get is a sharpness to see who owns the aircraft, which means the aircraft will be slightly side on, not directly overhead.

There are always a few plane spotters around Dublin airport, taking photos. Most don’t seem to have very long lenses.

I had a go at trying to catch a real sharp image of a high altitude aircraft and this was the result.

According to tracking software it was at 36,000 feet. I used my 500mm for this photo.

For me it is not as sharp as I would like so I am thinking of using the 800mm for added sharpness.

That’s very nice, it’s not the sharpest but at that height and the speed it was travelling at I think you did quite well. Do you mind sharing your settings. What software do you use to get info on the plane.

Try the app flight radar 24 to confirm altitude, speed, airline etc.

Took this unexpectedly while out shooting birds using a 600mm. The plane was fairly low as it had just turned after take off. I’d recommend a shorter lens ie 300mm-40mm for sharpness, as even fairly slow planes like this are tricky enough to pan with using a long lens, unless of course that you are going for high altitude shots.
