Padraig, as you well know with wildlife photography you just don’t get the photos without doing the research. I have been watching Kingfishers for the last 3 years. The ones I see around my area from time to time thankfully seem to have survived the cold winters. I learned a lot about their habits by following UK photographer Charlie Hamilton James advice. He had a programme on BBC last year and his website is very informative. I tend to listen for their very distinct chirp as they can be hard to spot. Then if you see them with a fish in their mouth they are usually living in the area.
