ok, know zero about portrait/people photography etc. etc…
But I really like this, I like the pose and find myself drawn to his eyes.
I think that the harsh lighting suits the subject matter. Can you tell us a bit more about it technically ?
AllinthemindParticipantjb7ParticipantThanks Mark, Simon-
Techie stuff?
Lighting-
hand held flash off camera- the SB800 has a preview button
that allows you to see the effect of the lighting-
very usefulShot on Polaroid 55 through an rescued old condenser from a broken spotlight-
this is a moulded lens, about 120mm dia. x 35mm thick in the centre-
about 6″ or 7″ focal length, very poor quality-I taped it to a Copal 0 lensboard,
giving me about f/9.
Flash was metered to quarter power at this distance,
though its good to know I have the option of making some stick-on Waterhouse stops-
F/16 might give a good balance between centre quality and edge swirl-I took it just after dark yesterday;
the shutter was a dark cloth thrown over the camera,
and the flash was operated manually-And that’s about it-
Maybe it should have been put in the Lo-Fi section because of the lens-
but probably not…Thanks for the comments-
j
MarkKeymasterThanks for the info JB, very interesting.
FYI, you posted it in the correct section. I’d like to see more ‘Lo-Fi’ in here to be honest.
Its all photography after all :)PeteTheBlokeMemberVery inventive JB, and the result is intriguing, to say the least.
I was wondering if you’d been using a Holga when I first looked.
My second thought was that you’d scanned in a photo you took
in your boyhood. Noely and you ought to get your heads together
and manufacture cameras – the Scheimpflug principle meets a binocular
eyepiece boosted by parts from anti-aircraft searchlights.I think you should call it “Pinky” for the 1950s menace you’ve captured.
jb7ParticipantThanks guys-
Pinky :D
How very apt-
it does have a peculiarly British Noir look to it,
if that’s not pushing plausibility to unlikely limits-Yes, I agree-
would like to see more crap optics in the critique section myself-
but there’s not much in the LoFi section these days anyway-PeteTheBloke wrote:

Just how old do you think I am?j

Old enough to have had – and finished – your boyhood.
I wasn’t implying that cameras used moulded lenses in those days!DenverDollParticipantExpresbroParticipantCertainly does have that British 1960’s set in 1950’s Post War Britain feel to it Joseph (now there’s a mouthful).
Interesting that you use the preview flash flash function on the SB800. Is that the strobe effect thing you’re referring to? I’ve never really used it personally (except to childishly try to blind someone temporarily..or once in a pub in Meath when the power went , it was handy as emergency lighting for a few seconds!!).
Is it something worth using do you think?
RobMemberFascinating and inventive Joseph, and what a result.
Definitely like to see more of this type of stufff being posted.
Definitely like to see more experimentation going on.
Definitely going to experiment more myself.
Nice work…Rob.
gavinParticipantIts a great shot..the harsh light looks really well, has a great early british mod feel of it.
Not Pete the blokeParticipantHarsh lighting sooooo suits this picture jb. I actually thought it was Steve McQueen when I first saw it at work this morning, and thought “where in hell did jb meet Steve McQueen?” Maybe it confirms Pete the blokes suspicions re your vintage?
gerardkParticipantGreat portrait – as an aside it reminded me a lot of this movie ;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangster_No._1
The pose makes it work imo – the technical details add to it but regardless the pose and composition work very well.
jb7ParticipantThank you all-
appreciate your very kind comments-This is a bit of a departure for me;
I’ve been looking for a nice antique portrait lens for a while,
but haven’t found one that would work on 5×4-I’ve had this one taped up for a while now,
but only got around to giving it a go yesterday-I do have to pick out Robbie’s comment,
seems like you’re working out for a guest appearance on ‘The Late Show’-
I enjoyed that-And Ross- not quite sure about the Steve McQueen reference, but I enjoyed that one too-
Gerard, I missed that movie, but maybe you’re not far off the mark-
And thanks Sharon (Jupiter Peppermint? If I sign up to Flicker, will you be my friend?)
and Gavin, and Rob-j
btw, this big film business is expensive, or I’m cheap-
either way, this is the only exposure I made-Bet you all wish you had instant feedback, like my polaroids :D
someday…
