Bad News?

Liam2673Participant
In response to a post in the Street section, titled Bad News…..in response to these times we are living in”?
Are these really bad times?
Personally I’ve had a very enjoyable year so far, around the country there are some cool things happening, really good festivals, good sporting events, nice places to shop, nice cafes to eat in ….is it just me, or are the newspapers going way overboard on how bad everything is. So the economy has cooled (a lot), but the pace of life is a bit easier as a result also and I’d say people on average are still a lot better off than they were twenty years ago….. it certainly doesn’t feel as bad as the 1980s ever were.
nfl-fanParticipantWell… try telling that to the one of many people who have lost their jobs and/or homes… I’m sure they’ll be delighted to hear about all your nice cafes and places to shop.
Circumstances will be different for everyone.
“Uncertain Times” might be a more appropriate description.
cathaldParticipantI was made redundant over a year ago now and to be honest it aint to bad
I dont feel that I am any worse off when I look in my pocket at the end of the week
I feel that when you have more money you just spend more money
Dont get me wrong it is tough not being able to buy what-ever you want when you want it
I still see lots of camera gear for sale and a while back I would have just gone and bought it
but now if I want something I have to stick a small sum away everyweek until I have enough
The one big upside is I have loats of time for my family which is greatCathal
Liam2673ParticipantWell NFL I was moved from a 5 day to a 2 day week, so while not fully unemployed i’m half way there……can I go tell myself about my nice cafes and places to shop? Like Cathal said, spending time with the family is fantastic, I’ve really enjoyed the past four months..
nfl-fanParticipantcan I go tell myself about my nice cafes and places to shop?
Not sure why you’re asking me that? I’d imagine so… but really only you can answer that.
By the sounds of it I’d be tempted to jack it in, go on the rock n’ roll and enjoy time with the family in nice shops and cafes.
I’m starting to pen my Top 10 Reasons for Jacking in the Job now.
J
nfl-fanParticipantDear Boss,
I’ve decided to jack in the job for the following reasons:
10. This recession isn’t as bad as it seems so I don’t need to contribute to the economy
09. I’ve stopped buying the newspaper, too much bad news, the money I’ve saved allows me to sustain a good life
08. It’s not 1980, standard of life is better, I don’t need to work
07. I don’t need all that camera gear
06. I will have an easier Pace of Life
05. I can attend lots of Really Good Festivals
04. I can attend lots of Good Sporting Events
03. I will have more time to eat and drink in nice cafes
02. I can visit Nice shops
01. I can Spend more time with the familyI’d like to thank you and the organization for everything over the past 13 years.
Best Wishes
nflnfl-fanParticipantNow that I think of it… I could sell that Top 10 list to HR departments around the country.
Can you imagine this scenario:
HR Boss: “Bob, I need to talk to you”
Bob: “Eh? OK”
HR Boss: “Bob, sorry, but we’re going to have to let you go. Here’s your P45”
Bob:
“You bastards, all the years I worked here, all the effort I put in. Don’t you realise I have 3 kids to feed and a mortgage to pay?” HR Boss: “I can feel your pain Bob… but look on the bright side…”
Bob: “Jez… now that you say it… I couldn’t be happier. Thanks HR Boss”
miki gParticipantI’m surprised you didn’t have more time for taking photos in your list. It may be a recession, but it’s not as depressing as the ’80s were.
Liam2673ParticipantI’m sure some people find this funny and thats fair enough.
Personally, I don’t like it when someone deconstructs a post I’ve made and takes the p*ss out of it line by line. Thats not why I log on to the site.
nfl-fanParticipantDon’t be like that now Liam… you should be happy you inspired another nfl top 10.
We need to smile during these hard times… besides… it could be worse… it could be the 80s.
miki gParticipantI was made redundant six months ago and I was made redundant in the ’80s. It may not be funny, but you have to look at the positives, otherwise you’ll crack up. I always think of the song from the film “The life of Brian” to cheer me up. Always look on the bright side of life.
Alan RossiterParticipantis it just me, or are the newspapers going way overboard on how bad everything is
Yes, and no. Yes, times are bad for those affected by the current CC but the papers are having a field day too. The company I work for is unique in it’s field in this country in the fact that it as yet has not laid off anyone or gone on short time. Yes, it’s quieter, but sustainable. But recently we received a contract to provide equipment for South Africas infrastructure which will support us. We shipped 3 large machines out in July and invited the papers to view some positive news. Of those invited only 1 turned up and we got a corner piece in the weekly rag. If you said you were laying off two people it’d be front page news.
Unfortunately bad news sells. But at least nfl can see the funny side…
nfl-fanParticipantUnfortunately bad news sells. But at least nfl can see the funny side…
Just so we’re clear… see the funny side of what exactly?
Alan RossiterParticipantWell, seeing as you’re taking the pee out of the original post with your latest top 10 I would say that this would be an attempt at cynicism?
I’m starting to pen my Top 10 Reasons for Jacking in the Job now
Seems clear to me?
nfl-fanParticipantJust for the record and to clear up the statement
“Unfortunately bad news sells. But at least nfl can see the funny side…”
which might be mis-interpreted:
I don’t take any pleasure or see a funny side to people losing their jobs, taking pay cuts of losing their homes.
I wouldn’t entirely agree with the idea of telling someone who might have lost their job and/or their home that they shouldn’t worry, things aren’t that bad and that they can take consolation in the ‘fact’ that there are plenty of good shops, cafes, festivals and sporting events to be enjoyed. People’s circumstances will vary and the impact of the recession will vary too.
It’s no major revelation that selling misery and fear is a major ploy but the fact that over 90,000 people have lost their jobs is fact, not fiction made up by the newspapers… so to suggest there isn’t that big a problem… well, I just don’t agree.
It’s simply a case that the effects aren’t as bad for some as they are for others. Even if the recession is slowing down and the government, IMF, bankers & economists are all going around with half a smile on their face… it’ll be a damn long time before those 90,000+ jobs are recouped.
My Top 10 is a satire, my unique way of disagreeing with Liam. I can see how Liam might not like it.
