Badger!

Hi All,
This is a badger that i managed to photo after waiting for 3hrs for it to appear one evening , i don’t know where the sett is but i knew this was a route the Badger took from using a IR motion sensing video/camera for a few weeks. First time photographing a Badger and using the off camera flash on the 7D in any capacity. originally i had two flashes setup(one left ,one right) but one decided to pack it in on the night(batteries) so i had to turn on the on board flash and use the remaining flash to the left of the badger.
Hope you like and hope its somewhere close to the standard of the Badgers that Padraig usually posts up :)
shutterbugParticipantVery nice Tristo! it is a little dark, (well it is night :) ) the second flash would have helped
probably, but now you know he is there!!SeaviewParticipantGreat shot Tristo, a little dark as Jenny mentioned but I wouldn’t worry about that. Like Padraig I’m sure you will be returning to this spot in the future and I’m sure your results will only get better.
Dave.
miki gParticipantWell done Tristo.
This shot may be a little dark, but it still has the WOW factor. Beautiful detail in the eye. Well worth a re-visit to the area with an extra flash.PadraigParticipantGlad to see I’m not the only badger buff, tristo! As for the shot, I think it’s well composed and exposed. I don’t find it too dark, after-all it is a night shot. Its a pity your second flash failed. I’d be interested to hear your future experience with the canon flash system. I’m having problems keeping my slaves awake. What settings and technique did you use i.e. bait, remote release etc? If you can locate the sett you might increase your chances but they can be hard to locate at this time of year with so much undergrowth. Great work well done.
tristoMemberThank you all for the replies i will certainly try and get a shot with both flashes working this time. it’s difficult with so much vegatation around the flashes tend to light up the leaves like christmas trees :D you end up with some strange greens but i may do some clearing to lessen the clutter.
Thank you for the compliments Padraig i always enjoy looking at your Badger photos so wanted to try it out for myself. The canon flash system is good i would be the first person to admit i know very little when it comes to flash but i generally set it to E-TTL and away i go , on the night i had set the camera(7D) to only fire the wireless signal rather than a flash as well but as the second flash failed i turned the on board flash on also so i had a straight on light and a light to the left side. there is a setting that you can switch the slaves to that gives you i think an hour of awake time then they go to sleep i get paranoid that they are going to turn off for good so i usually press the shutter half way down every 20-30 min which keeps them awake. as for bait the oul peanuts and peanut butter are the business(organic no preservatives of course) , the camera has the wireless transmitter so there was no need for a remote release . I also used a small red torch to light the area i expected the badger to arrive in so i was able to use the auto focus on the camera(just!). i use a trail camera regularly to scout a location and from looking at that they tend to appear around 10:30 this makes me think that the sett is fairly close by. most of the techniques i used i either picked up from the web(yourself included) and Andy Rouse who has a very good book with case studies such as foxes , badgers and roe deer.
PadraigParticipantRaisins are pretty good too. I haven’t been brave enough to chance auto focus with my 40D! I also use a red torch but don’t have it on constantly as I pre focus in manual. I have the flashes on ETTL also, but might try manual at half power next time for a faster recycle time. Once you keep the shutter speed at the cameras flash sync Speed or lower (1/250) exposure is never a problem. I’m surprised to hear that a half press of the shutter re awakens your slaves. I have to actually fire the master to re awaken mine. Its not ideal but its worked for me so far. Maybe the 7D has something to do with this. I can’t find anyone (even Canon) who can tell me if the STE2 transmitter has a Slave Save Energy override and I don’t want to fork out for one just to find out. Haven’t been at my sett for over two months but you’ve re inspired me to go back again before the summer ends. Looking forward to some more posts!
