Balbriggan Harbour and Broken Boat

Was down in Balbriggan earlier on as I was waiting for my car to get serviced so had to kill some time so took a walk around. Below is a picture I took. Let me know what you think

This is an IR shot taken on my Nikon 24-85 hand held

    Martin

EDIT: Edited version, darkened down and crop from bottom and slight bit from left. Bit to much noise maybe in this image after the darken down

Thank for the feedback:-) I take it you do not like the shot which is fair enough. Presume that you think its just a boring picture of a harbor and a boat. I think simple shots are nice too. But sure no worries I’ll keep trying to get a better pictures of this area

    Oooh you sarky bloke you.

I didn’t see it, but I quite like it. The grainy effect suits it well and
the shot looks well composed. I mighta gone for more sky and
    less beach.

Anyway. I don’t know a lot. Hope that helps.

I have quite alot of image of this myself but i’d have to agree with Pete that more sky would definitely have made this a much more striking image.
But that said, I like it

I think it would be an inaccurate assumption-
    Its a nice enough picture,
but often a picture that isn’t liked will attract more responses than a ‘nice’ shot-

    Many pictures wither without comment,
but you have to ask yourself-
If you see a zero response post,
will you respond to it, just for the sake of it?

I think a lot of people here will post more about their own pictures than about other’s-
some people only post their own pictures,
or respond to posts about their own pictures-

But I do think your assumption is wrong-

If I get 3 responses to a picture,
do I then assume that the silence of the other 900 members implies dislike?

I like the IR effect on images but I think this one would work way better with colour – I say this without knowing what colour the area is!! I like it enough to comment though. The composition and your placing to tahe the photograph was well chosen and compliments the object. The inclination would be to move the lighthouse more in the rule of thirds area but you chose not to – works well where it is.

Interesting bump method applied too!!

Thanks for the feedback guys much appreciated. Yes looking at this picture after reading your comments I would think that yes more sky would have improved it. I like the IR in the shot I don?t think colour would have worked but its something I should have tried in hindsight. All my previous colour attempts did not work at all. This harbour is a bit of a dreary place to be honest so I was hoping the IR would give it some mood.

JB7: Thanks for the input you made some very good points. Maybe me assuming that zero responses to this picture means that the picture is not liked is incorrect. It is very hard to know though if you don?t get any response if a picture is ok or not. I do think that one thing that would improve this site is some sort of a rating system for pictures so that if a picture does not get any replies at least you might see a rating for the picture (people would give a number say between 1 and 5) as a minimum to give you some sort of direction. But I suppose I could set up a pole when posting the image in the first place to get this type of feedback.

irishwonkafan: ?Interesting bump method applied too? LOL Yes 4 responses within 10 minutes isn’t to bad:-)

    Thanks again all

I like the atmosphere of it.
It shouldn’t be in documentary section because is nicer than just plain doc. photo….
Yes, more sky (with clouds) would add more dramatic feeling. I would make it darker and crop a little from the foreground to increase that feeling…. IMO.

    Aint that the truth!

Personally, I like what you’ve done with your edit.
The new crop, with the horizon on the third, is a big improvement,
though I prefer the light in the first. It’s a pity about that cable –
one more horizontal that doesn’t add anything…

I had to reply again to this one – I’ve seen it now from my work monitor (on old CRT but quite a good definition) and this does look better without the clarity of an LCD monitor. I’ve fallen for this several times in the past so reserve judgement normally on comments. Forget about the colour comment I made earlier – this looks good, both versions.

(Do you get many double replies JB? )

    I sure do Alan-
Often I use the same ploy as Martin,
    and reply to my own-

Always a good way to remove a pesky zero

    Hi Martin!

Just saw this..I think it’s lovely and interesting and it makes me want to go out there as I have never seen this!

Technically I guess I prefer the second.. I think IR is a fantastical form expression and so often much more interesting than than the perfectly processed color or black and white photo for all that is worth.

I think we could start a discussion in general chat about what it truly means when someone posts anything about anything or doesn’t post anything about anything. I won’t start it however as I have already been disappointed occasionally by some users on here that I couldnt get into it without feeling compelled rant on my particular peeves.

I think in the end, a lot of it is timing. People dont comment if they don’t see the photo. Some people are more helpful than others, some are more generous with their praise than others, and believe it or not, some even find the time to be mean spirited. The feedback you get seems to reflect who was available to comment at the time.

    :D

I think that the crop helped and I like the second edited photo….

I wonder if this will turn in to “the longest thread that didn’t originally get a reply and then did”.

    Martin,
Interesting shot, like to see this in colour as a compare though.
Didn’t see this at all until now to be honest. Bumping it was a good idea.

My spin on it is, uploading a shot for C&C over the weekend would have less comments to it till Monday.
    Maybe I wrong here.
