Which presentation i don’t know, they all make me want to take a bite out of the screen. Do they taste as good as they look?

Great colours and well presented again Sharon
i think less DOF might work better here
the bottom of the bun and mushrooms, curlyfries(teeth watering)could be a bit sharper maybe
As you say it is more outdoorish but works well

:D Martin~~Thank you! So they at least look appealing..good start..have to admit…this didn’t fit even in MY mouth. I just put it together this way for the effect. I ate about a quarter of it..and yeah..I think it was good. I like my cooking. I’ve found my dream come true—-cooking and photography (and eating  )

:D cathald~~Thanks! I’ll try a bit more space. I’ve been using the 50mm f1.8 and I always rush because I want to eat  I need to maybe try something different or at least back up! Appreciate that :)

It’s almost midnight, but I have to go now and make some snack for myself… and it’s all your fault Sharon. Your pictures must be banned from PI for causing uncontrollable desire to eat. Seriously, that last photo is illegal!

    Onion rings? Melons?

I am not sure how could the others talk about dof and sharpness… that burger just looks crunchy, juicy…. I’m off to eat.

#2 has the best angle, although it is tilted. It needs a little more fill light though, maybe some white card to reflect light in (diffused off camera flash would work too). The background and the direct flash don’t work with the first one, and the angle is too low on the last one..

I’ll post a few and you can get revenge.. Especially as I can’t cook, but I have started with some cooked rice/pasta salads recently. I’ll shoot them when I have figured out how to get fluffy (not soggy!) rice.

Very good Sharon, very appetising. As Sean mentioned, number two has
the best angle, and no distractions in the background, though the light
has suffered a little and it looks underexposed. The colour of both the
meat and the ketchup in the first would look so much better…

randomway~~I think you are just like me and like to eat. In the end..I suppose if get the chance to advertise food..then I have got one thing right so far…and that is at least heading in the right direction~~thank you!

seanmcfoto~~thanks a million for all those tips and observations. Very very helpful and all taken on board!
Would love to see some more and hardly a chance I’ll get revenge..but heaven knows I’ll learn tons~~btw..my fam would be delighted to eat exactly what you posted. It’s the sort of thing they eat whenever I am gone. (Four dudes..and a dog.)

Rob~~thanks so much for looking..these observes help me so much..sometimes I read and look back and say..what on earth was I thinking? Definitely the case here. Your comments are spot on.

Brickee~~just saw the time of your post Jim..whoa you have some nice hours  glad to be of some inspiration
Hope to keep being that and hopefully an increasingly better photographer!

EvaB~~Thanks for the input! Sometimes I am so unhappy with myself. The only one of these I thought was any good…the first one..seems to be the most useless..I need to read more I think…or go out to eat more…or something…

The red sauce in all 3 look like its sticking its tongue out saying “come and get me”. :) Great snaps.

It does look very good Sharon,
    and I’d like some-

But there are a few questions-

Apart from putting a picture in your new section,
what are the pictures for, exactly?

Given all the ingredients in the picture,
I might be tempted, well, apart from actually eating it,
I might be tempted to open it out-
    to show what’s inside-

The meat in the sandwich is missing-
or rather, we’re being asked to imagine it-

    The bread is very dominant-
and we’re left with some details around the periphery-
the ketchup, and curly things, in particular-
which may not be that appealing to those who might like their beef in a gourmet bap-

    Cultural differences-
    they’ve been mentioned recently-
but I’ve never seen watermelon served with a barbequed burger before-
    am I missing something?

The background is always as important as the subject,
and in the shot with a background, the first,
it seems a bit like a collection of shapes-
I can make out the mug, and the door,
but it seems like a kinda random placement-

I don’t know anything about food photography,
but I imagine you’re having fun with these-

Sorry if I seem a bit unduly critical-
but although they’re good, I think they could be better-
and if you can answer the first question I asked here,
then that might help them improve-

Still want to eat it though…

Genie~~thanks!..that ketchup is a bit off color in a couple of them..I hadn’t even noticed until Rob pointed that out…I like your observation

    Jb7~~hmmm..that was a mouthful J…where shall I start?

Would it be ok to be honest and say…I don’t know what they are for….yet.

I started out just just wanting to see what I could do with the new camera…and the new lenses…and the food was available for no charge.
Then I got really ridiculous and starting thinking about a teacher I had years ago who prepared food for magazines. I thought maybe I could do that.

I didn’t really set out to make it appealing to a universal audience. It’s just what my family eats on Memorial Day here. The watermelon is a big deal and so is the burger…and so are the curly fries. It would be common here..but not common for a vegetarian here. I usually have veggie burger too on the grill…served with watermelon and curly fries.

I’ll take a break and determine if this is productive or not. I suppose if I don’t intend to do it for commercial enterprise…and refuse to stick to a boring blank background because that it what sells food ..then I’d still do it and still ask for help.

Realistically..I don’t give much thought to why anyone takes photos of anything they do here. I just usually assume it is because they enjoy it…I seldom see people post their professional work..though there are many many professionals on this site. I think most people put stuff up here that they want feedback on..and no one really tells why they need the feedback….
If I have to think of a reason for what they are for…I think it is because I want to try to be good at one thing…and this fits my limited time..all done at home and in the course of the meal…just seemed an odd niche for me.. :?

Anyway..it makes me happy too..it’s been making me really happy…so it’s a good thing

    Sorry Sharon,
don’t want to offend, or anything-
Its maybe that they’re just a bit literal-
we all know what a burger is,
so a picture of one is going to make some mouths water anyway-

but it looks like there are some universally good ingredients in this picture-
and others which are a matter of taste-

A good friend of mine wrote his entire dissertation for his Diploma in Architecture using food metaphors-
its makes a very basic human connection-
and as a recent post in the sports section proves,
food can be an emotive subject-

If these are a documentary type of picture, then fair enough-
    that’s the reason-
but there is still a question of product over process-
and perhaps there is some benefit to documenting the process as well as the end result-

I think some of the ingredients might make good pictures too-
maybe even better ones than when they’re all enclosed in the bun…

    maybe…
