Battle of the Bands – The Academy

My school (Mount Temple) puts on a few Battle of the Bands competitions every year in The Academy, I’ve shot 2 gigs there so far and will be shooting a third this April. These are just a few of my favourite shots from the most recent gig in January. I’m looking for as much advice as possible to help me improve :). These were shot with a Canon 60D and 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 – I know it’s not the best lens but it’s the best I had for a long time, I only bought a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 so hopefully I’ll be able to improve my shots at the next Academy gig! I shoot RAW. Sorry if I’m not meant to embed all of them! They can all be found in large (1000px on longest edge) here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/77333370N04/with/6930227203/” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

5faytheParticipantHi Stuart,
Well done with these.
The 60D is a fine camera and while a superfast would be great to have you seem to
be doing very well with what you already have.
The wider aperture available on your new 17-50 will definitely be a help in certain
situations but will not have the reach of your 18-135 which you might miss in certain
other situations.When I see these and read your story I wish I had carried my camera to all the gigs I went
to in my earlier life. :(I personally have no issue with you posting so many images in one thread but I would suggest
that you number them to make it easier for PI members like me to refer to the images when commenting.When we attend a gig our senses take in the sound, colour and and athmosphere generated
by a combination of the band, the sound system, the lighting, the venue and our fellow audience members.
Producing a two dimensional photographic image that conveys some of what we experience live is the task at hand.We have to contend with all sorts of challenges like low light, too much light, coloured light, moving subjects, awkward
positioning and probably all handheld and probably using available light.I like what you have produced here and I think you should be pleased.
The one with the guitarist in mid air is really good.
It’s quite a leap and you have captured it very well.I’d probably comment on a few more individually if they were numbered.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more.
All the best,
John.
sndipoMemberVery nice set! Agree with the comment above, well said John. Some great moments and emotions captured, I’d be very happy with these!! :)

Thank you both for the feedback! I’ve gone back and numbered the pictures 1-10 starting at 1 from the top, I didn’t think about that before posting them up!
As I said, the next gig is in April so I’m looking forward to trying out the 17-50, I did worry about the zoom rage but after going back and checking out the EXIF data I realised there aren’t many shots I take over the 50mm mark. Thanks again :)mehfestoParticipantHey Stuart,
Some great photos here – especially considering the ISO limitations of your current camera and widest aperture of the lens you used; It’s really fantastic stuff!
You’ve got the lot here really – they’re sharp, bright and interesting. Not to mention that each one is visually different from the last. I’m really Impressed – the Academy is notoriously dark and you came out with a great selection. I reckon that if you wanted to, you could approach some of the music blogs in Dublin and get yourself access to some bigger gigs. You might need some faster lenses, but you’re onto a winner!

Woah, I’m sorry, I can’t believe I missed these two posts, sorry guys! Thank you though! I’ve since shot 2 other gigs in The Academy, including The Riptide Movement, the photos are on my facebook – http://www.facebook.com/StuartComerfordPhotography” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
I’ve moved up to an F/2.8 Tamron 17-50mm now, and have a Canon 50mm F/1.8 and Canon 85mm F/1.8 as well. Hoping for a Sigma 30mm F/1.4 sometime soon!
