Beautiful…

jmaxParticipant
This week saw me finally returning to the studio, with a trip to Fermanagh. I had put a lot of thought into what I would like to achieve with this shoot, and it was to fill what I felt was a void in my portfolio. I’d been concentrating too much on just shooting what I saw as fashion and forgot all about the beauty side of things. So I felt it was time to let my makeup artist and friend Louise Burrows loose on my models, but the biggest problem I had was finding models that I felt were suitable. I started with a shout out on facebook to see if anyone would be interested and I got a lot of positive feedback but I felt that no one quite fulfilled my requirements. So I started looking through friends and friends of friends to see if I could find someone with the look I wanted. Finally I across two ladies that I thought would be perfect for the shoot.
The setup was pretty simple; one beauty dish placed about four feet in front of the model and angled down at 45 degrees, a strobe light either side of the model to light the background and a silver reflector placed between the model and the camera to soften the shadows caused by the beauty dish being angled down.
The models were Amanda Reid and Lesley Millar, two friend s of mine. Lesley works for Style Academy Model agency and is used to being in front of the camera, where as Amanda had never tried anything like this before and was a bit nervous going into the shoot.
The camera I used was my Canon 7D along with my newest purchases a WFT-5E (wireless file transmitter grip) and a Canon 24-70mm L series lens.
I’m sure you’ll agree that both models and Louise the makeup artist did an outstanding job on the day.

All feedback welco
5faytheParticipantHi John,
I have never tried any of this so not really qualified to comment.
That said it’s an interesting thread and surprised nobody with an interest
in this type of photography replied to you.Technically the images look good to me.
#1 is my favourite.
The extra makeup in the other 3 dosen’t really do anything for me especially
in #3 where the white circle looks a little odd.
That’s just a personal thing rather than a criticism. The eyes look really good.
Cheers and good luck.
John.
jmaxParticipantThanks for the feedback its much appreciated.
Yea it annoys me about this site that everyone looks but no one replys.
The make up in the latter shots was just myslef and the makeup artist having a bit of fun and trying something different. You’ll either love it or hate it.

Hi John,
I appreciate that when you go through the bother of posting some of your work and don’t get some comments it can be annoying.
You even gave an excellent description and diagram of your set up.I wouldn’t be too hard on our fellow members though.
I know I haven’t been as active as normal over the last few months due to work pressures etc.
You never know whats going on in other peoples lives that might curtail their PI contributions.
Dont get disillusioned, keep up the good work and hopefully you will get loads of comments in the future.Cheers,
John.
RASMITH32MemberLOve number 3. I am a fan of white space when it comes to portraiture. Can you confirm what post shot processing was involved in these shots??
By the way great posts and very intuitive. What this site should be about and misses sometimes
connieParticipantI think the play with the makeup is was a good choice. I like the white backrounds in photos and I appreciate the description at the beginning. It always helps when you know how something is done :)
jmaxParticipantThanks for taking the time to reply guys.
5faythe – I appreciate what you’re saying about time, but it really doesn’t take that much longer to write a reply than it does to just look at the images. I mean how long did it actually take you to write your reply? It only takes a minute and I know it helps a lot to get some critique rather than none. It’s also a bit sole destroying when you see 100 views and you only have 1 reply.
RASMITH32 – The post processing is the one thing I never give away about my work, sorry. But I’m glad you liked the shots and the report.
Connie – Yea I find it helpful too when I come across someone that has done a detailed report on lighting ect, just to help me with my future shoots.
BOBBYParticipantHi jmax, nice photos, a bit stark for my liking but i suppose that’s the trend now. what’s a beauty dish?
jmaxParticipantThanks for the reply Bobby, below is a description of a beauty dish taken from wikipedia
A beauty dish is a type of photographic lighting device, one of a number of photographic soft light devices. A beauty dish uses a parabolic reflector to distribute light towards a focal point. The light created is between that of a direct flash and a softbox, hence giving the image a wrapped, contrasted look, which adds a very dramatic effect.
PD_BARBSParticipantLovely set of shots, it is good to see people post their lighting setups, it makes it a great thread. I agree with the earlier comment regarding some of the additional make up, but lovely lighting and great processing.
jmaxParticipantThanks very much. As for the makeup, I know its not going to be to everyones taste, you’ll either love it or hate it.
