Hello, great site, I have a Nikon D80 but not familiar with the ins and outs of digital photography, while using it in low light I find that the flash does not do such a great job and am wondering if I need an additional flash or if I’m doing something wrong? I am one of these people that operate on Auto unfortunately but am determined to become better, any help would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking of buying a flashgun and it would be great if I could get recommendations. Thank you

Hello ranga. I am new to P.I. as well. In my brief experience I would recommend getting a flash gun. There are various ways of increasing light, increase your exposeure compensation, or lower the iso number your camera is set to. Experiment with aperture settings. The lower the number the more light gets in, or lower your shutter speed which also lets in more light, obviously you have to avoid overexposeure and cammera shake in both cases. I AM NOT AN EXPERT, perhaps if you go to one of the more technical forums you will get more reliable help.

Hi Ranga and welcome to the site, low light usually means using a tripod to avoid camera shake,
which also allows you to use a longer shutter speed, as James suggests aperture, shutter, and iso
all play a part in shooting in low light. Try Aperture priority………not too far away from Auto, you
choose the aperture ie the lowest number your lens will allow 2.8 or 3.5 etc and the camera will select
the right shutter speed to get the correct exposure. Get into the habit of using a tripod though it is
one of the best ways to get sharper pictures in low light.

A very good book to read is “understanding exposure” it really helped me get off the Auto setting.
Best of luck and practise, experiment and most of all enjoy :)
