Hi all, as the title says I’m a begginer in this game.

Just bought a Nikon D40 with an 18-55mm lens and im delighted with my buy.
Was out taking a few shots over the weekend (please see my posts), please let me know what you all think too . . .

Anyway, my main reason for joining this site was firstly to learn about photography from the more experienced photgrapher out there. Already I’ve benifitted from this site with comments posted from other members, so PLEASE keep ’em comin . . .

Well, hope to see and hear from you all soon,
    Colin

    Hi Colin,

welcome to the forum. Nice camera you have there. Have you set tthe CSM Menu to “Full”? By default the D40 comes with the CSM Menu set to “Simple”. This only allows you to access about 6 Custom Commands, but “Full” gives you 17.

    Enjoy!

Everyone’s super friendly and helpful so it’s brilliant to be able to tap into the vast amount of knowledge here!

    Take care,

Thanks Dave, I just changed that setting on my camera but i’m not too sure what exactly the change does?
Ya wouldn’t mind giving me a quick run-down of what it does? (please)

    Thanks in advance,

Colin, the Custom Menu gives you control over various aspects of the camera. The simple menu just gives 6, which is all you can see on the screen

The full menu gives you much more, but as the screen will still only show the same 6 you need to scroll down to get access to the new commands.

Even with these extra commands you may find some greyed out and not accessible, this is usually because the camera is on Auto. If you switch to Programme, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority for example, you get control of these settings.

Hi Colin – welcome along. I’m a beginner myself, and have found the forum really useful. Don’t be afraid to ask “stupid” questions, I do it all the time!
