Belfast Zoo – 2 shots
-
joe_elwayParticipant
I had a chance to leave work early yesterday and head up for the first time. Pretty gloomy out when I got there so I jumping from ISO200 to 400 with slow shuter speeds.
Male Chimp through dirty viewing glass:
Ring-Tailed Lemur… They are loose and running about the zoo. Had a bunch of them walk past me on the path.
SodafarlMemberAidan, 2 great shots I know how difficult it is to get decent shots up at Bellevue particularly like No1. Hope you enjoyed the hills or had you been warned.
How many did you get of the prairie dogs they are a bit of a favourite up there.
looking forward to seeing some more.
Sodajoe_elwayParticipantI took a few of the Prarie Dogs. I didn’t realise they had expanded out beyond their “enclosure” until I walked around back to the ruined building. There’s another whole colony there. There were a couple of them posing for me but it was too dark by then to get a good shot with enough DOF. Funny to watch them through, especially when the males were doing their thing … jumping up on hind legs while emmiting a loud squeek like a squeezy toy.
I think Dublin is better laid out for photography. The backgrounds are more natural looking. The enclosures in Belfast Zoo have very man-made looking backgrounds so you can’t get a good shot. The Cheetah enclosure in particular …. you’re right over them looking into what looks like a pit with wooden structures in it. The Spectaled/Andean Bear enclosure is superb. It helps to do a bit of climbing so you can put your camera through the slot in the glass near the top. It was too dark when I got there to shoot them. Being black, you have to overexpose them and they were in shade.
The hills…. I’m still having flashbacks.
erinParticipantLovely animals, with excellent portraits!! Great dof and light!!
GrahamBParticipantReally nice shots.
I was in Dublin Zoo a few weeks back and the condition of the glass was terrible.
It was actuall really frustrating. Not only taking pictures but even just looking through.
Its a real frustration.ExpresbroParticipant2 Great shots Aiden. The Chimp especially has loads of character…..almost like he sat and posed for you. A wise old man humouring the young whippersnapper with the camera :D
joe_elwayParticipantThanks folks.
He was an old man alright, Robbie. Built like a bodybuilder, though. Himeslf and the females were putting on a show not disimilar to what we saw in Dublin Zoo a few weeks back when the keepers through some eggs in. The females went off afterwards but he just sat there surveying the scene.
ExpresbroParticipantMust be a lot closer though Aiden…that is a really detailed close up..dirty glass or not. I’d love to do a whole morning sometime with just the chimps and Gorilla’s. They are so fascinating..I suppose it’s natural enough that someone who finds Street photography fascinating is going to gravitate to our closest cousin’s in a zoo enviroment :D
Mind you…might be interesting sometime to just sit somewhere unobtrusive and shoot the people on the outside of the cages for a change…
piketpikMemberRobMemberjoe_elwayParticipantThanks folks. Your feedback put the first smile on my face of the day. Been a stinker and I need that. Very nice timing.
