Ben Lynch Shoot, Rush.

ExpresbroParticipant
Did a shoot for a friend of ours last weekend. Her son Ben Lynch sails in the Laser class (think that what it’s called) and is an Olympic hopeful for the 2012 games in London.
Have to say..it was my first time out on a launch (Dinghy with a motor) and I have to profess my admiration for you guys who shoot regularly on the water ( looking your way Joseph). It was bloody hard to keep the camera anywhere close to steady…the light was kind enough as long as it was behind me, so I was able to up the shutter speed ans compensate a little for the continuous bouncing around.
Anyway..had a really enjoyable afternoons shooting and hopefully bagged enough decent shots for Ben and co. Just a few below:

jb7ParticipantI never cease to be amazed at how easy some pictures look-
until you actually try them-I find it difficult to get good pictures of boats-
you have to take a lot to get some good ones-The notion of composing within the frame is entirely risible-
the frame is usually performing the same waveform gyrations as the rest of your world-
and sometimes the next guy’s stomach-Its a bit of a shame the pictures weren’t from the front-
though I’m just as used to see the rest of the fleet disappearing in front of me too-The dark glasses don’t necessarily help the portrait-
he looks like he’s chatting, rather than racing-I suppose any observation about horizons in the middle one is a bit pointless-
although I could remark that the mast is not quite plumb-Its amazing how many pro sailing shots printed in magazines and calendars (in particular) just don’t bother with level horizons at all-
Good to see more sailing shots though-
and thanks for the namecheck-Its always nice to get out on the water-

I know just what you mean about trying to keep shots in the frame…and according to the guys I was out with..this was a calm day…they were hoping for more wind..eek!!
The portrait shot was actually taken after the race while he was pulled up near to us..so your observation is correct…he wasn’t racing :)
As for horizons..well..I gave up after 10 minutes worrying about horizons…leave that to the landscapers..hehe!!
Thanks again for the comments Joseph..and yep..hopefully I’ll get the chance to go out again when it’s a little windier and hopefully bag some more action type shots.
RodcunhaParticipantGreat effort there Robbie, very nice work…
I personally have never tried to shoot on the sea but I can imagine how hard it must be with so many elements to take into account.Keep it up, you might be working as a sports photographer soon,
Cheers,
Rod

you will get some more chances to take shots from a boat at the weekend, the seal trip is all on a boat
ExpresbroParticipantWell I hope it’s a bit steadier than the one I was in…hehe!!
Must remember to pack a black plastic bin liner so… :D
Rod…me? A sports photographer…I doubt that somehow!! I don’t do well with deadlines and time limits…like to take my time and take stuff in…
I’d be sacked in the first week…. 8)
