It seems to me that we are all gadget freaks to some degree so on that assumption, here’s a topic to ponder on this bank holiday weekend.
What is the best/most useful photography gadget that you have purcheased or indeed improvised? While we are on the topic, which gadget did you buy that you wished you had not?

The worst gadet I bought has to be the Canon EP-EX15II Eyepiece Extender . A good idea in principle, but it leaves the viewfinder image so small that manual focusing is nearly impossible.

The best was a simple hotshoe spirit level, inexpensive but worth its weight when trying to get your horizon straight in landscapes.

Worst gadget – wireless remote control for 400d a few years back. Pretty useless, was handy once for a family shot but nothing that the timer couldn’t handle, and for any other remote purposes a wired one has a more solid feel. To be fair I only paid about €5 for a cheap chinese knockoff.

Best one was a grip for the camera, really made portrait style easier due to the portrait button and more steady feel.

It may be too common place to be considered a gadget, by my most useful purchase was a decent flash. I’m a landscape photographer, but I like to take pictures of my family and friends, and the flash was a revelation to me. I’d always avoided the purchase because I didn’t see that it made much of a contribution to the type of photography I do, but I bought one a couple of years back to use at my sisters wedding. Now my friends often remark how much nicer my pictures look than theirs, even with similar cameras.

one of the best gadgets I got was an angle finder
when doing landscapes I like to get as low as possible and this stops me getting down on my hands and knees
and also stops the wife from nagging me about dirty jeans……
worst thing was a cheap tripod from ebay which would blow over if you sneezed…hard to beat a decent manfrotto

the best gadget I have is my Zoerk Panorama Shift Adapter for the 5D, perfect for architectural shots
and shots of tall things like trees!

worst was a cheap ND filter from china, the filter was made from plexiglass instead of glass, rubbish

best: decent manfrotto tripod and head, or camera with live view with grid lines over (great for interiors)
worst, mini manfrotto tripod… about €80 and almost never used, I thought it was lost with half of my kit, it was the one thing I was not thinking of replacing, rather thinking what else would I get with the €80why oh why did I buy it?

Best piece of kit? It’s a toss-up between my Manfrotto tripod and my SB800 flash. Least used? I have a cable release in the bottom of my bag which I haven’t used in years, though I’ll keep it for my manual Seagull TLR. I also seldom (never) use my Cokin Grads, preferring to shoot bracketed and process as HDR.

I forgot about DxO, Photomatix and PS CS4 as favoured gadgets of a sort, I have to say DxO is great. also Dr Browns1.2.3 plugin
