brendancullenParticipantWoh – thanks for posting. Hadn’t seen this version.
My Dad had a brain haemorrhage and was in a coma for a year before passing away – and this tune always brings a tear.
This one is my favourite – ‘Steve Vai – Whispering a Prayer’.
Its a ‘Theme and Variations ‘ along the lines for Ravels ‘Bolero’. The simple ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ type theme can be heard after about 90 seconds – and builds to an incredible crescendo…the tune still audible in the mass of notes as it progresses. Some serious fingering on display here.
He’s one of the the top 50 musicians ever to grace this planet – in MHO of course!
MartinParticipantDot know about best solo but one I like to listen to every now and again VERY LOUD is…. Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Noely FParticipantBoth good indeed, sorry to hear about your dad mate. I’ve got far too many guitar solos to pick one but some that spring to mind are….
Frank Zappa – Orange county boy , Lynyrd Skynyrd – Freebird , anything by Hendrix :D The Cardiacs – Is this the life ( full version )
The Doors – When the musics over.. I better stop now, far too many :)Gone2themoonParticipantNice video. Just sent on to my own dad. He’s a floyd fan. Hd video is better.

Noely FParticipantAH yes, I was a regular on the London circuit…..part of the family :D
markst33ParticipantAaah lads…I’m very disappointed that nobody mentioned “Suicide” by Thin Lizzy from Live & Dangerous. Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson in top top form. If you haven.’t heard it, check it out
MarkKeymasterOh boy, not sure I could ever bring it down to just one.
Certainly alot of Hendrix, some Pink Floyd as mentioned. Rory Gallagher and a dozen other blues greats :) I’m going to have to give it real thought otherwise this could end up being a very long thread, which mightn’t be bad as it become the Top N greatest solo’s of all time :D
MarkKeymasterBack so soon with a great Rory Gallagher track, that should be played real loud !
The sound quality on this youtube was one of the better ones.[youtube:6kllnl9x]pjxhwNrhIgA[/youtube:6kllnl9x]

One of my all time favourites. Saw them doing it live in Dalymount (the hairs -although scarce, still stand up just thinking about it) :D

markst33ParticipantFirst album I ever got was Black Rose. It was a Xmas present from my uncle back in 1979 and it determined the type of music I was going to be into for the rest of my life. Actually speaking of Black Rose, there are a load of songs on that album with brilliant guitar solos. Waiting for an alibi, With Love, Got to give it up, Black Rose. Gary Moore was the guitarist for that album. Nows theres a man who can play. Also Ozzy Osbourne had a knack of getting truly excellent guitaists into his band. Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee spring to mind.
Noely FParticipantGood choices! How about sticking with the Irish bands and giving The Horslips ” King of the fairys” a mention. I know it’s not strictly a solo as such but it is a cracking piece of plank spankery :D
