Best photo locations in NYC

I’ll be in New York in a few weeks and hope to get a couple of days to myself while I’m there. Now we’ve all seen the iconic shots of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building etc. etc. and I’m hoping to get some of these myself. What I want to know is where do I go to get these shots? For example, if I want a shot of the Chrysler Building someone might be able to tell me the best shot is to be got for the top of the Empire State at sunset, or the best shot is to be had from such-and-such a street.

I’ve looked for this kind of thing on the web and can’t really find anything. I know I can turn on the photos on Google maps but many of these are misplaced, and nearly all are placed on the object the photo was taken of, and not where the photo was taken from.

I hope this makes sense and some of you good folks can help me get to some good locations. I know getting the good photos is down to my own ability (or lack thereof) :D
