Best Used DSLR/’s?

    Hi there :D

I will soon be on the look out for a new DSLR and i am interested to hear your opinions on which DSLR would be the best value, i am not completely ruling out buying a brand new camera but there does seem to be some really good, used, high end cameras on the market, also, what would be some key things to look out for (pros/cons) when looking for and inspecting a used DSLR?

I value your knowledge and experience in this area and would like to hear your opinions, thanks

if you sign up to MPB Photographic in the UK, they will send you updates as to when they are providing 12 month guarantees on second hand nikon bodies. I also looked into Wilkinson Camera who do some refurbished canon bodies. They would be my two known sources, but neither of these are Irish based, though I would think these companies would pay for shipping if the body went belly up during warranty. I would also look into Switzerland for equipment if you or a buddy are heading that direction (in keeping with the EU warranty), very nice prices there :)

Are you looking for crop or full frame sensor? you want 12mega pix or are you seeking more? I got say, Amazon did the nikon 7100 crop body at a nice price and the manufacturers cashback was an added bonus over last Christmas, might it be worth waiting until the festive season. I gotta say though, if you got the budget, go full-frame.

    Thanks for the pointers :D

I’m strongly considering the Nikon D3200 as my first DSLR but if a used, higher end model could be got for similar price then i would also consider that, its image quality that i am mostly going for.

Hi Steve, you have not mentioned a budget? I would also suggest your local camera shop, places like Conns & Berminghams carry a range of S/H cameras, also check out our own For Sale forum.

Also take into account a lens and what photography you are into i.e. landscape, sport etc

My budget . . . hmm, around the €500 mark i suppose, i have my eye on these 2 at the moment but i can’t decide which one to go for, their both Nikons but one (the older model), comes with 2 lenses and is only slightly more expensive than the more modern one, as the lens is almost everything in photography, is this a no brainer decision in your opinion?

Hi Steve, there are plenty of second hand cameras out there and really camera bodies are
not as important as the lenses you will put on them, if you have some idea what type of
photography you would like to get into, my advice would be to invest in the best lenses you
can afford and get a second hand body. If you buy wisely the lenses will be with you for
life, camera bodies will invariably be updated as you progress.

If you are leaning toward Nikon then the D300 or D90 are two excellent models which you
should be able to pick up. I dont know much about Canon but there would be comparable
models there also, I started off with a Sony and I loved it, it was a super camera (A700)

Hi Steve totally agree with Jenny about the lens, again it depends on what type of photography you intend shooting! Do not discount a S/H body I started with a Nikon D50 which I bought cheap, before moving to the D80 (which I regret selling as its a great camera)! One of my favourite all round Nikon lens is the 18-70 although an older lens its is very sharp and out performs a lot of the newer “kit” lens like the 18-55!

    So check out eBay etc….

Also suggest you visit a camera shop and get a look and feel of a camera before parting with your cash at Argos!

    Cheers Steve
