Best way to buy new camera / VAT etc.

I’d appreciate some advice on what would be the best way for me to purchase a new 5D mk2 and where to buy it from. I’m registered for VAT (graphic design business). I know it’s relatively straight forward if buying from an Irish supplier but I checked the prices up North and Jessops are pretty competitive (£1523) – how does this work with claiming VAT back though?

I bought two just before Christmas from Calumet UK. You’re VAT registered so do not pay UK VAT – you have to tell them this though.

Thanks Mark, that sounds good, it seems to work out a lot cheaper… next question. If you do this can you still offset a percentage of the cost over the next few years for depreciation?

I’m guessing yes, as it’s an item that would be used for a few years, it’ll depreciate. As much as I’d rather it was written off in one go, my accountant has said it has to depreciate.

I thought about going up North, so glad I didn’t.

I bought from Conns, it is not the cheapest place but when my 5d and 16-35 fell 4 meters and half the lens rolled down the road I was so lucky, I walked in to Conns with a lens in two pieces and a smashed Camera. They took them off my hands, handed me a new 5d and 16-35 and sent me on my way while they sent of my kit to see if it could be fixed. it was was repaired and they did not even charge me a rental fee. that said traveling you might save a few € buying it up North but you have to drive all the way up which has its own cost including petrol. Also if you buy from Conns they will give you free sensor cleaning
