Ok so i found a better mantis picture so thought i’d post it. Once again comments and critique very welcome.
joes64Participantyes it a far better pic than first post ….i like it , and composition is good . The brightness of the background overpowers the subject slighty and i would clean up the dust spots and stray strands visible in the background as they can be distracting.
eshortieParticipantbingbongbiddleyParticipantWell done. As you said yourself this is much better than the other one I commented on.
The only problem is the eye looks a little soft – the front legs seems to be where the lens was focused.
Is this your pet? What do you feed it, live crickets?

I have to be honest, I don’t know how you can see that from this picture. The leg in the foreground is obvious enough but from my monitor (and it’s a relatively good Apple HD one) it looks good to me. I like the picture but I would have moved around a bit to show the subject from a different view point with the front more prominent and then a change in background. The background makes the scene look artificial as if in a vivarium (probably is anyway). If there had been a more natural looking (but still out of focus) background such as some vegetation and darker colouring to make the subject more prominent, then I think it would have improved the photo.
Good shot all the same, can we see some more.

I have to be honest….I mustn’t have had my contacts in on that day. :) Or maybe I was drunk. Or standing on the other side of the room and squinting.
Yeah, it looks sharp to me to. What the hell is that bingbongbiddley guy talking about?! I think it’s more to do with the lighting that more detail appears on the legs than around the face. The eye doesn’t look fully defined around the edges though..or something. Am I completely wrong? I don’t know. I’ll get my coat.
osheadParticipantNice shot. The shadow below the little critters eye hides any detail that may be there. You could try bring that up in PP. I like the composition. It works well. You could do a little spot removal on the image too.
