So I liked the fact that I could capture this bird, but need advice on the settings composition etc as I was pretty much making a mess of it. It was fast it was extremely sunny and 1pm. the only time they had a display on!

I think you have done an excellent job Connie, nice and sharp background out of
focus, not overexposed, great job :)

    Thanks Jenny
I must be too critical lol I just wish the second was more in focus…

Well the second one is in focus where it matters, ie the head and eyes, just the wings
are oof and that is because they are moving, so I would have been delighted to get these
    two shots!

You have a couple of good shots there. I don’t know much about shooting birds, and to me it looks like you have got 2 that are very good, after all, as has been said by Jenny, you have the head and eyes perfectly sharp, and having the background out of focus, shows the bird very well. I am not too sure of the type, it’s either a type of falcon or an eagle, I could never tell which is which, and it could be something else and I could be completely wrong :)

    Thanks Nigel.

Sorry I should have said, this one is a Harris hawk if I remember rightly. I need to take notes as well as photos lol

Really like #1. The bird just jumps out of the shot. Well done

Hi Connie, I’m no expert on BIF shots but with your first shot if you were to do a tighter crop round the bird with a bit more room for the bird to fly into, on the right, might help with the composition. As for getting sharper images you need to have your shutter speed way up but for that the sun to play it’s part and, with Canon, focus mode on AI servo for moving subjects. I think the second pic is just lacking from shutter speed.

Have you done any post processing on them?

Nearly forgot. Nice male Kestrel :)

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the tips Fergie will dig out the raw file and give that a go to improve composition. Post process was really cropping in raw and some wb and tone adjust with a little sharpen and NR.

Nice shots there of a Male Kestrel ( grey head & grey tail ). Shooting birds on the wing, especially when they are close is hard as they can really move quite fast.So well done.
Did you manage to get any shots of this one hovering ?

Great shots Connie, I love them! :) Well done, I wish I could capture something moving that fast in focus like you did! :) Unfortunately none of these beautiful birds llive near me here, or maybe thats a fortunate thing from the point of view of the other small birds in the area  Lovely photos!
