Black and White Seascape

A few months ago I heard someone say something that stuck in my mind…. “If colour doesnt add anything to an image, then you don’t really need it”…. It didnt really register at the time but must have been brewing in me, because when I processed these I remembered that remark..

    Comments welcome on these.

First one is superb. The B&W works very well, the composition is spot on, nothing to dislike a great picture well done

I’d agree with the sentiments on the first one. The whites are very white and blacks…well, very black. What sort of setup and processing did you do to achieve these as they are both striking images.

I like also, bit of a halo around the rocks but minor detail….

    Lovely stuff.

The first one in particular would look great printed up big and hanging on a wall somewhere.

Two great shots. I like them both, but looking cosely I think the rocks in the middle distance add something to the first one

    Thanks for the comments.

Alan: Both are Sigma 10-20 at 16mm. The first one is f8, 1 second. This was +2 stops from the matrix meter value. The second f8, 0.7 seconds was +1 stop. I bracketed a few shots at f8 to get various shutter speeds and different textures on the water.

Processing was ‘auto’ in Camera RAW. I wanted black blacks and white whites so photoshop was levels and curves adjustment layers, selective colour adjustment layer and a black and white adjustment layer. Masks to stop the highlights getting blown.

    Two smashing shots.

Just make sure you straighten the second one before printing!
