I had posted this with my intro but Mark suggested I post it here too.

It’s a Black Kite from the Ngorongor Crater in Tanzania. That’s a “conservation area” on the south east border of the Serengeti. I spent two weeks with a buffy on a custom photographic safari that included 5 nights camping in the Serengeti and it was truly the best two weeks of my entire life. If I was good enough, I’d move there and take photos for a living and to hell with the convenience of modern life. But….

I guess, like most everyone elses efforts, this one has a story to go with it. I kept a diary while I was out there and documented the who thing on my site. I posted loads of photos, some good and some not so good. I posted the latter because, well, they went with the story. Knowing that loads of other Irish people are now choosing to go on safari and that knowing what to expect is difficult, I finished the whole thing off with a seciotn full of tips and lessons learned. Most are probably relevant to Botswana and Kenya too. The diary is on here (it isn’t dial up friendly: http://www.highwaycsl.com/Travel/Tanzania/Tanzania.htm

This photo is one of my faves from a year of photography. 7 of these Kites circle a picnic ground literally taking food from peoples hands as they tried to eat. I took my camera out into the the middle of them and started shooting. Eventually I got a couple of shots from it :-)

    Aidan,

Thats a terrific shot. So sharp where it counts, ie the head.
Lovely position of the bird also, sweeping towards the camera

    Well done

Thaks folks. That was a fun afternoon. It was the first time I’d ever had a chance to shoot birds in flight like this and I was probably shooting for about an hour. THere were probably some better shots to be had … 2 or three of them fighting mid air over food, a bird circling, hovering and diving at tourists’ food, etc. When I started processing I was worried I hadn’t gotten anything but was delighted I got this one.
