I took a few shots of this windmill a few months back and now it has become a bit of a study for me. This shot was taken with a 17-85mm lens, and I have gone back to recreate the shot with wider 10-20mm since then. Anyway, this is the original, and for anyone who is curious the ‘experiment’ can be found on my flickr stream!

    Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Katie :)

It’s a nice shot – very good conversion, great drama and tones in the sky and really good contrast and exposure. You managed to hold the whites without blowing them. Nice and sharp too – so technically it’s damn near perfect.

Perhaps the composition though is just a little boring with the subject centered?

Nice photo Katie… its a great conversion to BW, and a good sharp image… I think you chose a nice perspective of the sails. I’m not sure … but maybe it would be better to see a bit more space in front of the windmill … but then again maybe not :D

Great b/w, and I’d be proud to have done so well. I’ve only got more prosaic, touristy shots (taken with a Fuji S5500); must get down there again with a real camera…

I love the sky in this. Excellent shot Katie. I would probably crop it tighter on the right hand side so that the shadow is on the diagonal.
Really like it, well executed and love the post processing.
