v4hondaMemberBeen there loads of times never seen it in that light before, then again i never got out of my pit at that hour of the morning
KPMParticipantGreat shots Richie,
fantastic light from the sun and nice blending work.
The second shot is my favourite, in the first shot I find that the four rocks are a bit too dominant, and, whatever the optical illusion, I nearly feel dizzy looking at the whole image (or maybe I’m just overtired).Lovely work again, and that seems to be a cracker of a lens you’re using.

dr_wolfenspielParticipantexcellent shots. beautiful colours and composition.
i must pay a visit to the coast some time for a sunrise/sunset.Not Pete the blokeParticipantFantastic work Richie! Was this last weekend, and if so what sort of time was the sun rising at? Do you always use the double exposure method rather than using ND grads for the sky? The warm colours over the rocks are what make the shots have impact.
I see from your pbase gallery that some images in your autumn gallery were shot at greater than 200mm – what lens do you use for that length, the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 or faster lens? (Sorry for asking so many questions… )
Jay KingParticipantI love the first image, because if you look at the bottom third of the pic, it looks like the camera was pointed down at the rocks from above them… then scroll up and obviously it’s pointing towards the horizon.
Nice trick of blending the two exposures – never thought of that!
In the second pic however you can see a slight divide between the large mass of rock on the right hand side, and where the sky meets it… But I only noticed it when I realised it was two photos merged – cos I looked for it!
ciaranParticipantThe first one is just WOW.. the colour of the light on the stones. Superb shot(s)
steelydanParticipantfantastic shots, Im Jealous… I like the first one more, simply for the detail in the Rocks
richiehatchMemberHeh… Thanks for all the nice comments guys… I will try and answer your questions
KPM – Yeah the 17-40 is great on the 5D… very sharp all around… and lovely contrast… 17 is very wide… in a few I had to clone out the bottom of my tripod leg… I have the Sigma 12-24 as well… its just mental on the 5D… in fact its quite difficult to use being so wide…!
Brandyman – Yeah Sunday last is right… rose from the bed at 4am…. left the house and picked up a freind at 5am… got there taking it easy at around 6:45 to give me plenty of time to suss out positions etc… sunrise is at exactly 7:30… the info in the EXIF is wrong as I forgot to but the hour back on the camera (note to self…!). I have only one ND Grad filter and find that when I use it I see a sort of purple cast. Of course it can be removed in PS but I tend to get better results merging 2 exposures. Its especially better when you havent got a straight horizon.. sometimes it can look very fake so ye have to be carful… I will post my technique when I get around to it if anyone is interested…! The lens used in the autumn gallery is a 200mm F2.8L and a 1.4x Canon converter… great combination but to be honest its not used much anymore as I got the 300mm F4L IS which is sweet…!
Jay – I think what ye might be seeing in the second pic is a slight sharpening halo as nothing appears in the original full size shot… I try to avoid leaving any eveidence behind when combining exposures by using very large feathering between layers in PS..!
There ye go… I’m off to Buapest for the weekend tomorrow so probably wont post any more replies til Sunday evening at the earliest…!
