To be honest I didn’t think that WX camera club went outside the Art’s Centre other than to go home on a Monday night.

Quite close to the truth there John…probably too close…
astroshotParticipantNice photo Pat. I reckon the focus is slightly off, but only slightly. If using unsharp mask or smart sharpen (better), keep the radius between 2 and 3 and adjust the percentage until it looks right.
Hope this helps, astroshotParticipantOh, and before you apply the sharpening tool, select the magic wand, click in the dark area, invert it to select the moon, and feather it by 40-50 pixels (depending on how high a resolution your image is). Then, apply the sharpening, If you don’t do this, the sharpening has the effect of creating a false white edge to the edge of the moon.
Without wanting to hijack your thread, here’s an image I took in the last few days of similar moon suspended in a clear blue sky:

astroshotParticipantThat has more detail in it alright and is a bit sharper.
In the first one, some of the brighter impact regions were washed out.
Here, they are better preserved.
I reckon you can push the sharpening a little bit more.lousyParticipantYep I pushed the sharpening as you suggested and I think it look a bit better.. any more though and it looked weird.
Thanks for your help.Pat
astroshotParticipantYea, I think you’ve reached the limit there alright.
BTW, what camera and lens did you use?lousyParticipantjb7ParticipantThe sharpening here, on the web-sized reduction, is one thing-
but how does it look on the full-sized original?
and is this much of a crop? There seems to be a bit of an outline still-
looks good here though-j
lousyParticipantThe sharpening here, on the web-sized reduction, is one thing-

and is this much of a crop?Hi Joseph.. the crop is a 4×4 in crop from the original and all tweaks and sharpening done on the 4×4 and then downsised for the web.
