Bright background – dark foreground

    hi,

I recently been taking photos with canon EOS 400D and I cannot seem to set something right…An example of the problem is this…take a photo of say a light gray stone bridge, with cloudy sky in the background..it comes out with a dark black looking bridge and intense white sky, it looks awful! I can do everything else with the camera but cannot sort this problem out. Can anyone advise me please?

Welcome aboard and hope you find the site useful.

First try stopping down the camera. You could also expose for the bridge if the surrounding area is not important. If it is …. then take 2 pics – one with the bridge exposed properly and one with the sky exposed properly then merge the 2 in PS (what was the Sky like in the first place – blue sky with good fluffy clouds (Sunny day) or just white cloud overcast day?).
The more expensive idea is to buy some Neutral Density filters and play around with them.

Just some ideas but I’d really need to see the results to know what to do.
