For some reason, given that we’re getting some nice autumnal colours now, I decided to head to the beach instead the hills on saturday morning. I was at least rewarded with some nice light and a deserted beach. Heres my best from the trip.
To start the critique, I am not particularly keen on that dark strip of beach , and the fall-off of the colour in the sky at the top right.
Thanks Mark.. yes, well spotted they are windmills – there is a windfarm about a mile out to sea. Nothing wrong with your eysight then!
To balance the exposure I used a 3 stop ND graduated filter which I positioned diagonally to align with the sea/beach transition. It is supposed to be a ‘hard grad’ however the lightening of the blue sky in the top right corner suggests it’s not as hard as I anticipated.
Yes the dark patch of beach is a bit off-putting. I believe it is the tide mark, but it does look a bit grotty when compared to the lovely sand higher up the beach.
I can’t help but feel that it’s pleasant but a bit ordinary Gary.
I find the composition somewhat akward, the photo is almost split in two with the near dune and far sea… it hard to look at the entire picture without focusing on one of these two specific elements.
