Broken 70/200 f4 L lens:

I just need to share my pain here,
back from the Waterford tall ships, i take my camera bag out of a waterproof container, forget that my canon 70/200 f4 l lens is still in it , and drop it about a foot high on the tiles !!!!
at the time i thought it was still ok , until i tried to fit it on my camera. AF not working!!
    So here is my dilemma:
i now have a 5d mk II , and the 70/200mm was not giving me enough reach, so i was considering changing it for a 100/400 mm.
the 70/200 mm f4 L is only woth 400/450 used on a good day.
i am afraid that repair costs could be higher than value of a lens that i need to change anyway.
plus, where do you get this type of lens repaired anyway?
finally i’ll haveto save for a while if i need to replace it, the 100/400 mm is L lens isn’t exactly cheap, or is there any other alternative?
so, what should i do?

Ouch – I feel your pain.

Did a quick Google and came up with two repair centres, both of whom repair Canon lenses. Both in Dublin.

    1. http://www.camerarepaircentre.com

    2. http://www.cameracare.ie/services.html

The 2nd guy charges €25 for an inspection of the lens. Then you can decide whether to go with his quote or not.

    Hope that helps.

    George.

one thing about cameracare is they are very slow…..and there is absolutely no contact with them!…they had my camera for 3 months and did not get in touch once!… i repeatedly rang them too see what was happening and they just kept on telling me they would call me back. also if there is any real damage they send the stuff off to canon u.k anyway (which i think camera repair centre do as well) …thats what they did with my camera.i was in the place on dame st……did’nt look like they had anything very technical there in regards to repairing stuff……now i might have been unlucky…….

The 100 – 400 is a great lens and would work great with your camera. There was one sold in the for sale section only the other day for a good price. They pop up from time to time.

    Dave.
