Yeah I know what you mean Sandy, and yeah, you’d better believe it! Genius with the Playstation 2 though

I’m not really a fan of this shot Rob, but I’m struggling to articulate the reason why. Contrast in the overall image is ok with a nice wide range of tones, but the whites are dangerously close to being blown and are only really in the clothing and buttons. Naturally our eyes are drawn to areas of high contrast, which means, certainly for me, I spend more time looking at their clothing than their faces. I’m guessing the shot is taken with flash (direct) which has left it a little flat in terms of lighting and also a tad washed out, even though it has been controlled pretty well.

I’d be inclined to go back to the original shot and try converting it again. Rather than setting the white point for their clothing, use the brighter spots on their skin, or perhaps eyes. This will blow the whites, but you can brush these back in using a mask perhaps? If you can tone it down a little, I think the content definitely has appeal and could make for a really nice shot.

Thanks Ciaran for your comments, all of which I agree with. I’m not a huge fan of this shot myself either, apart from the obvious sentimental appeal (it’s such a cute capture really). And I can find so many faults with it myself. The conversion is really amateur and I’m still experimenting a bit on that end of things. Si already mentioned to me about the use of direct flash like that, but hopefully I’ll have a new flash arriving within the week and I might be able to make a bit more of my indoor shots. Good tips about setting white points by the way. I’ll keep on experimenting, and I’ll be looking for more tips with my next lot

    Rob.
