I really loved the shots of the Blue Tits that Aiden submitted
today, I have been trying to get half decent shots of birds
and havent been able to get that sharpness that Aiden achieved.

ps….just checked and I think this may be a Chaffinch not a Bullfinch

Yip… That looks like a Chaffinch to me… A bullfinch is much redder… and harder to photograph….! I hardly ever see them…! Nice pic regardless…!

I’m fairly sure it’s a male Chaffinch. I’ve only seen a Bullfinch twice. One flirted with our feeders over a year ago. Have you done any processing on the shot? It looks like a mild bit of sharpening, etc might pop it a little.

Really nice location for a bird shoot too. Some might complain about the OOF branch in the back being there (usually critics looking for somethign to pick on) but I think it gives the shot a natural look. I think the eyes are in focus. Being a head on shot, it’s gonna be hard to get the whole bird in focus with a long lens unless the light is great or you want to sacrifice with noise.

Thanks! I have a cherry tree right outside the lounge window
and have feeders on it, so the amount of birds that visit is
amazing, mostly tits and finches. This was sharpened a little
and was taken through glass which probably didnt help, the sun
was shining right on him kind of lit him up!

The glass will be what did it. If it’s possible, you could open the window, hang a mesh curtain or something similar (even temporarilly) and poke the lens out through it a bit. Wait for some birds to come along and shoot.

I just bought a wrought iron hanger for a feeder yesterday for my own house. It cost around ?15 from Johnstown Garden Center near Naas. I placed it about two meters from my back door which slides open. I’ll hang one of those log feeders from it and then clip some branches onto the iron. That’ll hopefully bring in the birds. It’s up this week to let the birds see there is a new source of food, even though I can’t shoot until the weekend. The door has a curtain which I’ll open enough to stick the lens through but be closed enough to hide me from the birds. Maybe it’ll work, maybe not.

If not, I’ll move the hanger close to the back wall and away from the house and set up my hide when it arrives.

I just had a go at this shot. Wee bit of shadow and highlight +5 or so. Slight S on curves. Tiny amount of USM sharpening: 35/0.8/0. Hope you don’t mind.

Dont mind at all, looks good thanks!
I just got new feeders today and put them on to
said cherry tree and you should see the amount
of finches attacking each other then a Great Tit
comes along and they all scarper! Great to watch
I wont get any work done today!

Great Tit’s are bullys. It’s funny to watch a smaller one chase of larger finches with it screaming behind them. If you get some good light and lots of birds, try to get some inflight fighting. The noise from them is cool … lots of fighting and wings colliding. I had some fun watching the Coal Tits chasing each other through the thick of our trees. That should be just warming up now as the males start to define territories.

I got some long distance stuff at ISO 800 a few months back of two greenfinches going at each other. I had to crop it and it was noisy as heck so I wouldn’t share or print it but it was cool to capture it.

Next step for me… putting up some bird houses. I’ll put them away from the feeders and facign north as I’ve read is best. I’ll probably put some branches nearby as an approach but not near the boxes themselves… this is to preven predation of the chicks.
