Poor bird, used to be puffed up to the size of a tennis ball. Feeding the babies is
    certainly taking its toll…

Looks like she’s been on the Birdie Atkins diet Rob…

Great perspective on this shot..you were obviously right down there with the bird. Great DOF as well.

    Like it :D

Graham probably heard me go “oh no!” whenever I saw a Robin in the L panels last weekend. The reason? It’s a devil of a job to retain detail on them. All of mine have looked too smooth on the breast and underside. The same appears to hold true here with this one. Still looking for a solution! Strong composition and the focus looks spot on too.

Cheers for your comments folks, appreciate your looking.

Aidan, I see exactly what you mean about the lack of detail on the breast
and underside. I must go through the other images I ran off during this shoot
and see if there’s one with a bit more detail. Or perhaps the little b*****rds
don’t have any detail there, or they hide it as soon as the hear your AF whirring

They are loosing weight to be able to carry more food and to be easier to escape from danger. Nice shot.

Cheers Randomway. Never thought of that being the reason. Makes perfect sense…

When you see them puffed up it’s often the bulk of feathers, not the body. Woodpigeons often look very fat. They puff them up in cold or when they are undernourished in order to preserve heat. Counter-intuitively, a sleek looking bird may be in better overall condition. Don’t forget that a bird which starves itself feeding its chicks will kill itself and the chicks – evolution would have put paid to such stupidity long ago.
