Buying a Bronica SQA
-
ben4130Participant
Im buying a bronica SQA from a mate of mine later this month,
Its got the Body, back and waist level viewfinder and the 40mm lens.
I think he wants about 250 sterling for it.
What are peoples thoughts on this, sound like a good deal or am i paying over the odds.
I have compared prices to ebay they fluctuate so much and you dont know for sure what you are getting there.
MartinParticipant316 EUR sounds about right
Which version of the 40mm is it? The PS or the S, The PS is the newer lens. The 40mm PS has a 95mm Filter Thread which is expensive for filters. The 50mm lens is the common wide angle lens because it has a 77mm thread which filters are cheaper for
What back is it? Is it the 6×6 back or the 6×4.5 back. Is it a 120 role film back?
Run a role through the camera and make sure the spacing is constant between the frames. Make sure the winding motion on the winder is smooth
The SQA does not have a bulb setting, only goes as far as 8 seconds. To use a bulb mode you have to use a little lever thing on the lens which can be a pain. The SQAi version has a bulb setting.
Have fun. I use the SQAi system myself and think its great, super bang for buck…

ben4130ParticipantA friend of mine owns the camera, i have used it and it all seems to be working fine. I guess its the p version of the lens as its quite old. Infact i think it has a built in lens hood and doesnt take a filter at all but i could be wrong.
It has the 6×6 back on it. Im just hoping he can find the darkslide, last time i used it in may he couldnt find it.
im just going to give it a look over one more time before i buy it, might try offer him 200 and see where it goes from there?
MartinParticipantThe older version has the built in hood alright. Optically im sure both lenses are identical its just an extra coating for flare etc that is on the PS version.
Find out if the back is a 120 or 220 film back. Not much 220 film around these days. You can put 120 film into the 220 back though from what i can tell(but check this out if it is the 220 back)316 euro is the top end of what I would pay, its a good price. Remember there is no light meter so you have to buy a hand held or buy a prism viewfinder with a meter in it…
You can pick up darkslides for around 10 euro, contact the ebay sellers directly, they normally have them hanging around…
have fun
Mben4130Participantits a 120 back and I have a hand held meter so im set there, I already use a bronica etrs, but im more into square medium format imagery.
Its just the step before I invest in a 5×4 camera I guess.
Ive been keeping an eye on ebay for some field cameras, but there is so much i have ot learn about 5×4 before i even attempt to shoot with it.
jb7ParticipantBen, if you want to get into 4×5, the choice is almost infinite-
However, there are bargains to be had-I don’t know what type of camera you’d like, or the photography you want to do with it,
but if I wasn’t preoccupied with something else,
I’d be looking at something like this for large format portraiture,
among other things-It’s an SLR, with a focal plane shutter-
though not very good for wide angle-If you’d prefer rangefinder focussing, there’s this type-
This one comes with dark slides and grafmatic holders-
perhaps the fastest way of getting through a lot of film in 4×5-I don’t have any direct experience of these-
though I used a Linhof Technica a long time ago-
a similar type of camera in many respects-They do offer movements, though obviously not as much or as many as a monorail, or even a folder-
and you’ll be able to compose on the ground glass too-4×5 shouldn’t be daunting, financially,
unless there’s something specific that you just have to have…
These ones should be comparable in price to mf-j
