Buying a DSLR from a "non" camera shop

I’ve changed my mind about buying a Canon SX1 iS, I’m going to go for the EOS 450d.
ARGOS have it now for €514.95 with 18-55mm IS lens.
Dublin Camera Exchange want €699.95 for basically the same package.(1GB card thrown in)
Would anybody have qualms or reservations about buying a DSLR from ARGOS?
I for instance won’t buy anything from PowerCity!

There should be no problem with buying from Argos. I bought a lens from them some time ago because the clowns had got the price wrong and were selling it way below list price. If I recall there were a load of other PI members did the same.

    Cheers, John.

If you are happy with the camera choice then I would buy from Argos before a camera
shop, they give you 16 days money back return if you are not happy with it :) You could
alternatively go to a camera shop and tell them the price Argos are selling at and if they
are willing to match it the business is theirs. In this day and age anything goes and I dont
see why we shouldnt haggle more…….if you dont ask you dont get :)

Just checked that and it’s the exact same price as Argos Uk, now that doesn’t happen everywhere.

Thanks very much for all the replies, I think my card is going to take a bit of damage tomorrow, €514.95 worth of damage to be exact!

Do you know whether you got the free canon training when you purchased the argos canon camera, was going to buy the 1000D in DID electric for the canon training free with IOT, but the argos 450D is brill value, especially if the canon training was included!

No, it doesn’t include “training” but to be honest, my personal feelings about “free” training etc usually involves parting with some moola.
I picked up my camera during the week even though Argos never actually showed it “in stock” I managed to reserve it online.
Haven’t really had a chance to use it yet, hopefully tomorrow.

Andrew, Just wondering how do you reserve something on line if they’re saying it’s not stock.

    Dave.

Dave, I’ve absolutely no idea! I just kept checking the site every day and eventually it allowed me reserve it for collection the following week. I fully expected it to “never arrive”. They even sent a text to my mobile to tell me it was ready for collection even though it was still showing as “out of stock” on their website. So I went to the Liffey Valley store on Wednesday fully expecting to be told it was an error and they didn’t actually have it in stock, but lo and behold, they did! But they are showing the item in stock in the north for £480ish.

I believe Argos are now a qualifying dealer for the free training. Check with Canon on 01 205 2400 and ask for the person in charge of the Free SLR Training.

BTW, the free training is free, you don’t get asked for a red cent. I run it myself and I wouldn’t have it any other way,

    Cheers Dave!

I rang Canon this morning and I’m entitled to the training and they’ll post the voucher to me.
    Result!

I used camera yesterday “in the field” for the first time, conditions were very good and took some nice shots, but again when I got home and processed them I’m a little disappointed with the sharpness. It has to be me! BTW, I would like to buy a polarizing filter, can anyone suggest a good one? thousands on the internet but I could be buying a piece of crap!
