Any recommendations for B&W landscape photography books, preferably in the square format? Think i need some help with composition in the 6×6 format so was thinking that maybe a few books might help. I have a few colour 6×6 format books by Charlie Waite but want to get a few in B&W(he has one which I will pick up)

    Thanks

    Hi Martin,

not too sure about books.. but have a wee look at this website for square format pictures http://www.michaelkenna.net
pretty breath taking stuff…. Read the interviews as well… very interesting!!

Lee Frost might be worth looking at as well, although I think it’s mostly 35mm stuff he does.

I agree with Jess on Michael Kenna, he is the main man for mono square format and the books are first class. I have Easter Island, Japan, Calais Lace and The 20 Year retrospective. I can recommend them all but the 20 year retrospective is best value as the others are Nazraeli books which are very expensive and printed in small editions.

It’s great value at amazon.com at the moment. Here is a link http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Kenna-20-Year-Retrospective/dp/1590050193/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206656457&sr=8-1 Next best is Japan, a smaller book but more expensive as i explained above.

Have you ever seen any of his work in a gallery Eddie? He never prints any bigger than 8×8
I would really love to see it…

It’s really well worth reading the interviews on his site, very interesting man.

Have visited his site before, stunning work. I’m going to buy a couple of his books later today.
    Thanks for the link Eddie.

I’ll get the ’20 Year Retrospective’ book but am undecided as to whether to get ‘Retrospective 2’ or ‘Japan’ hmmmm :)

Jess, I have never seen the real thing, a Michael Kenna print, I went over to London a few years back for Photography London with the intention of going to a Kenna show that was also on in London at the same time but the weather was apalling and I only got to the one show. I have read the articles, he keeps things very simple ” no D76, Rodinal will do” It was only last summer I was introduced to his work and have been reading about him ever since.

Mark, I can recommend Japan as a book, its super quality and there is something special about the presentation but I won’t say too much on this, I don’t want to spoil it. There is something special in opening a book and being surprised by it quality. That was my reaction when I bought Japan.

On John Sexton I can recommend “Listen to the trees” printing is first class, he was trained by Ansel Adams and his images reflect this. His first book “Quiet Light” is on my list, I was let down recently by a US publisher on a second hand copy.

I will also recommend The Americans which is to be re-published by Steidl this May, I have it on order. It has been published a number of times before but Frank has worked on this one with Steidl and is likely to be the last publication of this book in the photographers lifetime. Another book by Robert Frank is to be re-published and its called Come Again, it was first published a couple of years ago and sold out very quickly. Its a collection of Polaroids that he stuck into a graph copy book and Steidl have reproduced it as it was. Its amazing and will be highly collectable in the future.

There is a another book of square images “Ireland on the Edge of Europe by Agnes Pataux” which you might find around town, Its not in the Kenna class but has some nice square Aran Island Images, I believe the images were made on a Rolliflex.

Kenna’s prints are beautiful in the flesh, but only about 8 inches by 8 inches in size. Real simple technique but so damn gorgeous

Bill Schwab would be my favourite monochrome photographer working in the square.

I’ll have something to post next week about Charlie Waite, it’s very exciting for us in Dunamaise Photographic Society. Stay tuned
