aoluainParticipant
ah he’s at it again . . .
very interesting J. serious machine with some potentially serious results.
well done and best of luck for future testing/development.
Did you make the Carbon Fibre yourself ? would like to get your thoughts if so!
jb7ParticipantThanks Rob, Murchu, Alan-
Well saying that takes you back, reminds you of a simpler time…Thanks for the offers to carry the small stuff, appreciated, and just what I need…
Alan, no, would be great to cast my own carbn fiber, but if I were to have attempted that it wouldn’t be built yet at all. All the carbon was cnc cut, by waterjet. It was a bit of an experiment, learned a lot…
aoluainParticipantMurchuParticipantThere’s certainly a career or at least sideline as a cameramaker there for you, JB. The likes of kickstarter is full of funded & limited production run camera projects, if you were ever so inclined.
jb7ParticipantWell thank you for the vote of confidence-
This one really is a prototype-
I’m working on the next one now-This one is much too heavy, it was sized for really large lenses.
The next one will be a proper field camera, with a design weight of 5 kg, and film holder weights of 400g each.
There have been many lessons learned from this one, and there will be many improvements made…Users of Large Format are notoriously conservative, and I can’t see too many of them being willing to adopt a new system like this one-
It wouldn’t be cheap to produce either, so it would have to be a really premium product.In addition to that, the market is really tiny, it’s a crazy thing to want to do.
So I wouldn’t want to have to explain the concept to any of the tightwads on Dragon’s Den, for example.So, altogether, everything seems stacked against this being a commercial product.
But we’ll see…
MurchuParticipantI know what you’re proposing is a different beast to what is the mainstream out there, but reckon that is probably offset by the fact you may only need a smaller amount of buyers. Anyway, food for thought :)
Just as an example of some quirky film related projects on funded on kickstarter;
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wanderlust/travelwide-45-camera” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ondu-/ondu-pinhole-cameras” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/71185779/duo-a-diy-twin-lens-reflex-camera-for-instant-film” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;No connection to any of the above, just came across them, or rather posts about them, on forums.
On a related note, I remember seeing a 20×24″ large format camera going for crazy money a while back, something like $20k, so I guess the large format community is used to high dollar value items, even if the aforementioned 20×24″ would be quite a larger, and very custom item. Still there must be demand, and maybe the specific and individual needs of many large format shooters might point to the viability of a custom market..
In any case, I think if you were ever to revisit other projects like your handheld 4×5 point and shoot, you might find relatively substantial demand on a place like kickstarter, that might even fund other projects you had in mind.
Shame to see your talent go untapped, so forgive any pushiness in the tone of any of the above :)
jb7ParticipantThanks Damien-
Yes, I had seen those, in fact I think I posted a link to the Wanderlust here at the time- they should be shipping soon-
These are all perfect kickstarter projects, well two of them are, just the right price point.
This one would cost rather a lot more, so coming up with a good rewards strategy might be more difficult than coming up with a camera…
Anyway, not nearly ready for all that, but thanks for the vote of confidence-
Away again now, hopefully get to use it a bit over the next few weeks…
Thanks again-
MurchuParticipantFair play, look forward to seeing some of the results :)
I wonder if you’ve named it yet..
Alan RossiterParticipantSo this is where Mr Burns has been hiding. Good to see you’re still following the unconventional route ( for us mere mortals).
Alan.
jb7ParticipantNow Alan, just because I’m not on Facebook every day doesn’t mean I’m hiding…
lenticularisParticipantAny update on this fantastic camera?
Just out of interest…not in the market for one!
jb7ParticipantThank you, I suspect you might find yourself in the majority there-
Update coming after the new year is out of the way…
jb7ParticipantMarkKeymasterTruly a beautifully looking camera Joseph. The photo isn’t too bad either ;)
