My Darling Beloved has decided that we might possibly go to Westport
for a week in the summer. Who can recommend the perfect
spot for a family of four to have a great time? Self-catering is
fine. Hotel not out of the question unless it’s exorbitantly expensive.plainoldmeMemberForget westport you can go there on a daytrip! Check out Lough Conn instead. I’ve stayed in self catering cottages that are right on the edge of the lake. Eurocottages is the name of the company. The owner’s name is Mans Geerinck, he’s a family friend. Dutch guy, very nice! Gorgeous little places, big enough for families! Guy has a boat as well, you can rent in out and go out on the lakes and stuff. Its less than 20 mins away from castlebar too. Very handy.
http://www.eurocottage.ie/index.htmIf you’re hell bent on going to Westport specifically though, you’re best off looking at something like the Croagh Patrick Holiday Village. I’ve stayed there as well, and its damn worth it. Gorgeous scenery too. http://www.croaghpatrickholidayvillage.ie
Hope that helps! :)
PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks POM. Good places to start. My DB likes amenities close at hand
so she may insist on the town, but I like the look of the Eurocottages. Thanks again,
Pete
jb7ParticipantI’ve been google earthing that part of the world recently-
(excuse the verbing)
looks great-
funny we don’t see more of it here,
but I expect you’re gonna change all that-j
plainoldmeMemberEurocottages are great, but only if you can handle the wildness. :P
They’re literally down a good few dirt-tracks, in complete isolation. I loved it for the peace and quiet, with no modern well…anything, except radio! (I know, Im so-not-your-average-teenager!) But if you’re not one for the blissful solitude…you might just crack up out there!
If you’re looking at any self catering, you’re not gonna be “that” close to the amenities and such, in westport or otherwise. There are some decent hotels in Westport if I remember, but a lot are fairly pricey..
PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks POM. Sounds perfect for me, perfect for the waens and a nightmare for the DB.
I’d better go back to plan A.jessthespringerParticipantStayed here http://www.mccarthyslodge.com/ for a weekend a year or so ago, very nice place, lovely people who own it. Well worth a look.
PeteTheBlokeMembercathaldParticipantHello pete stayed at The Helm a few times they have b&b or selfcatering apartments and are down at the pier great spot
PeteTheBlokeMemberSwordieMemberStayed here for a few days a couple of years ago. http://www.theharbourmill.com
Nice place in the harbour area. Good pubs and restaurants nearby. And handy for many day trips.
Accommodation might work out a bit expensive for a full week.
Remember, Westport is split into two districts – about a mile apart. There’s the town itself and there’s the harbour.
A very nice part of the world.PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks Swordie. I’m starting to cotton on to the expense of a family of 4 in a hotel.
It might be necessary to sell the waens into bondage for the week, or something.
Last year we stayed in a hotel in central London for a week and it was cheaper than
B+B in the west of Ireland.monoParticipantTry Louisburg Its close to Westport, its a small town and is close to Roonagh pier should you fancy a day on Inishturk or Clare Island
Enjoy Mayo
