Camera Collectors

Are there any camera collectors among us? I’ve recently bought a few books on old Nikons, history of Nikon, etc, and may buy a few old cameras now and then ….. and even try to shoot a film or two with them!

That was a rather sad confession, wasn’t it!?

    Not sad at all :)

    I have a:

    – Pentacon 6TL with Carl Zeiss Jena 80mm MC
    – Ilford Super Sporti
    – Nikon FE

Want to get some more Eastern European cameras. A Moskva anything :)

I’m sad too as I have a batch of old cameras. I will post some shots of them in the next day or so. They all still work for taking photos.

Nice collection, Dave. Keep it safe as you may not know when you can make a few euro on it.
Last year I had a Film company look for an old press camera (sheet film type – Rapid Omega)
when they were filming some scenes for “Seriously Absent” locally. Think that is a working title.
Needless to say I did not have one and a photographer I know that has one refused to hire it at
any price even though he aquired it at a car boot sale

Anyway they would pay ?230 per day plus insurance. A local guy tells me he got ?345 for renting
an old box wheelbarrow for a week ! Its amazing what you ca get a euro for

    Thanks for the replies.

That’s an enviable collection of cameras, joolsveer. Thanks for posting images of them as well.

I understand that there are camera collectors’ fairs in the UK at times. Does anyone involved in that side of photography/collecting know of any major events worth attending?

For anyone who may be interested, I have since discovered the Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain ( http://www.lightwave.demon.co.uk/pccgb/pccgb.htm ). They have an annual fair in London each May – Photographica. This seems to be the event of the year for this type of thing. Their site gives details of smaller fairs and events as well.

Thanks for passing on the info. That is some link. I have to admit to drooling a bit over some of those cameras.

Another famous auction is Christies – very famous internationally.

They have about 4 camera auctions in the year. I can’t seem to find an online listing, but they do send out fantastic auction catalogues to those who subscribe.

I find the early months of the year a bit boring, so I fancy flying over to Christie’s for one of their auctions early next year – taking in Grays of Westminster while I’m in the area.

I’ll post a book review of some camera collecting books in a day or two and add several more if there is interest.

I hate selling cameras, they hold memories for me. I did sell my D100 recently though (I still think I regret it, it had a quality to it’s pictures that I can’t get with the D2x). I also sold off all of my Canon film gear and lenses.

    I’ve kept:

Nikon FM3A (probably the best manual SLR around, great for teaching)
Nikon f80 (small and very capable)
Olympus RC (Tiny rangefinder with a great lens)
    RB67 (with broken lens)
    RZ 67 with great lens
    Sinar 5×4

    Fuji S3
    D2x

The last camera being the only one I use professionally these days unless teaching, where the Sinar and FM3A come into their own.

Oh, and an old kodak antique, looks fab, leaks light though :)

I recommend the Classic Camera Collection too. Looks like these days they’re Leica only, but Pied Bull Yard in Holborn (in front of the British Museum) has (or had?) a number of camera shops there, including a museum/collector’s type of shop, and another shop with loads of vintage cameras (a quick google shows me it’s York Cameras). The atmosphere in there’s like something else. I bought a Rollei 35 from there, in great condition it was too. My biggest mistake was lending it to a friend so he could put a roll through. I dunno, maybe he’s just not finished the roll after 5 years? You know, I’m gonna give him a call out of the blue, I miss that camera.

Do you have to pay for the catalogs?
