Camera Injury Stories

This should probablu be in the General Chat section but I wanted to get the response of a few sports snappers.
I was at the Pats – Galway game the other night adn one of the players went flying off the pitch and ended up colliding with a camera man. I noticed the front oh his lens go rolling down the touchline then. Looks like it was the front of the lens that got broke off (I know zip all about lenses so I’m sure the piece was detachable anyways). Fair play to the camera man he just got on with taking snaps again for the rest of the match.
Was just wondering did anyone have any good stories of damage to them or their property while working at sporting events (of any kind). Just looking for a ncie read.
Brian
Oh and Pats won btw :D
jessthespringerParticipantDon’t really have any camera injuries to report… Well I did have this really cheap and nasty Jessops tripod once, only used it once
had it attached to back of camera bag, out walking with the springer, bend down to pick up tennis ball, tripod flies around and smacks
me in the face…. Proper black eye for a week!!Have seen a fair few sporting nasties, broken noses, dislocations, bad sprains etc, some of the worst were an open (the bone was
sticking out through the skin) fracture to a tibia (shin bone), the guy was playing indoor soccer, headed the ball, landed badly and
broke his shin. Was nasty!!And another indoor soccer one was when a guy headed the ball with the wrong part of his head and his teeth came out through
his lip… Nasty!!Broke my own tail bone twice, first time, crashed into another cyclist on the road when I was like 14 or something, then did it again
a couple of years ago, fell in the snow, well a very thin layer of snow with a great big rock under it!!! Ouch!!Stood on a fishing hook before as well, was swimming in a lake, put my foot down on top of it when I finished!
One of the most bizzare I have seen was, a kid and his dad in the pool, kid gets out, jumps in on top of dad, his teeth stick in dads
head, kid looses two teeth and the dad got three stitches!!That the kind of thing you were after?
irishshaguaParticipantJaysus ur a disaster zone
Just wondering do many photographers lose eqipment while on sports shoots….
Cheers for answering though

Glad I didn’t know about all this before the Mournes trip!! :)
Sgt_MajorMemberIm guessing the bit that came off was the lens hood which is detachable anyway, but prob broke the lugs in that collision…
I’ve broken every finger, dislocated both shoulders, both hips, broke both wrists, torn countless ligaments and broken my jaw in 2 places… all in Martial Arts.
I’m sure there are more, but the concussion has made me forget :D
:D

Photography’s a lot safer thank Jaysus.Sgt_MajorMemberirishshaguaParticipantGo for a shoot with Rob and NFL down on Sherriff Street or Finglas or something. Might get the blood pumping
Sgt_MajorMemberlahinch_lassParticipanthehe .. I’ve seen a couple of doosies at Rugby matches.
Leicester v Munster at Welford road last season, one of the players chasing a ball on very wet ground couldn’t stop before absolutely demolishing a photographer on the sidelines, heard afterward the lense on the camera was busted. At one of munster’s pre-season matches in Musgrave Park this season a photographer sitting on the ground behind the dead ball line got creamed by a munster player, but no damage done.
In both cases the player would have ended up injured badly had they not slid into photographers.. the next thing in line was a concrete wall!
Any time I’ve done pitchside and I’ve placed myself along the touchlines the munster backs seem to take my position as a target for kicks to touch, so I’ve nearly been hit by the ball a few times. So far I’ve been aware enough to avoid being hit.
paulParticipantThankfully I’ve no story to tell. I haven’t yet been hit by a player nor ball.
But, the last Leinster rugby game I covered, a photographer just a few feet away from me was clobbered as a try was scored and the player was then tackled in to touch. Nothing broken, just a photographer sprawled on the ground with two rugby players on top. Too close to capture any images by me, unfortunately.
kensutzParticipantDuring the warm up on Saturday night in Musgrave Park the Ulster players were using me as a target for their kicking or so it seemed. First time trying a rugby game and next is Leinster vs Munster so hopefully a clean bill of health from that one too.
Brian_CParticipantnot sporting but…. took a day off work a few weeks back, went up the Antrim coast. Anyway, while walking down a wet, slippy “grassy knoll” I slipped and landed on top of my camera and grip, full force into my back, resulting in a broken rib….. Just don’t make me sneeze…ooh the pain.

Ooh, nasty. but the camera was alright yeah
Brian_CParticipantkinda…. it wasn’t showing all the screens and wasn’t focusing properly just after it. Maybe it got a bit wet inside as it landed in a pile of mud, but 24hrs later it seemed OK.
