Camera Recommendations

A friend of mine is interested in buying his first DSLR. However he is also interested in Video and was thinking about buying a DSLR that also does video. I said I would do some research for him.
My own limited understanding of these cameras is that the video feature in these DSLR’s is not great. I feel that if you want to do video then get a video camera and if you want to do stills then get a DSLR. Am I correct. He is operating within a budget of €500 but I feel that he would get a good 2nd hand body eg Nikon D200 which is what I have, and 2 decent lenses with that kind of money.
any suggestions comments etc would be most welcome.

IsabellaParticipanti know quite a few artists who use these kind of DSLR’s for video work. it depends on what you’re shooting, and how much you’re prepared to spend on a video cam. I’ve used vid cams that cost in the region of 1000, but are pretty much automatic – very similar to a point and shoot compact, and they handle low light situations terribly. a DSLR is a hell of a lot more versatile where that is concerned, however the only one I’ve any experience of is a D7000, a bit more of an investment. I know a couple of people who use canons to make short films and the quality of their work os very very high so i really wouldnt knock them. the optics are better and you also have the ability to change the lens allowing for far more freedom than a non professional grade video camera.
those are my 2 cents anyway. i do not own either kind myself, these combo jobs did not exist when i bought my own DSLR but if i were to get another i would go for one that could shoot video if i wanted it to.
dmgParticipantFor a budget of €500 he should look into a Nikon D90 and lens. It’s a very capable dSLR which will auto-focus with AF-D as well as AF-S lenses and does video (it was one of the first Nikon dSLRs to introduce video, but it is a bit limited in this regard).
drazhaParticipantHi,
Canon 70d is the latest and greatest in prosumer category with a very balanced video vs photography feature and quality set. If you were interested in better photography, then Nikon 7100 would be the choice.
However, if finances are limited, maybe a Panasonic GH1 or GH2 is the way to go: these have been used by many film makers because of a good dynamic range and function sets…
Kind regards,
