Camouflage in Nature

You all saw how confident I was identifying the swan-
If I were to guess what this was,
I’d say it was the Coot’s more flamboyant cousin-
    whose name escapes me –

    Wow.
    I’m very impressed with this.
    Almost mercury, liquid motion.
    What’s the red hue/reflection?

This deserves to be printed BIG.

Not a great typical wildlife shot but it is a beautiful image.

    Moorhen?

    Thanks for the taxonomy Aidan,
I reckon I wont forget that now-

    It is a pretty picture,
and I’m afraid that will always be the important thing for me-
not being a birder, a pretty picture of a robin will always appeal much more to me
than an average picture of a lesser spotted infrequent visitor.

    Thanks Rob,
I’ve had another look and I reckon I’ve got a slightly better one-
one way or another, I reckon I’ll print it,
not sure of the size yet-

The colour is the reflection of a barge hull/topsides-
    sunlit-

Thanks both of you for the comments-

Same for me. I don’t need great details for a great picture. One of my faves from my collection is an elephant shot where the elenpahnts are tiny. The total package is what counts.

Great looking shot Joseph…took me a second or two to locate the bird…hence the title I guess

The reflected colours and texture of the water are really nice…like Rob said…. looks like liquid mercury..looks thick and viscous almost.

This one would sit just as easily in the Abstract section imo.

    Cheers

    Em, it already is-
    and its a better shot-
    but nobody goes there,
so I put a bird in it,
to get more people to look at it-

    Shameless, eh?

    Anyway, its called ‘Barge’
    and its here-

Its certainly a Moorhen or Waterhen if you like.
Personally i would have followed the rule of thirds here and placed the bird a little to the left and down a bit, it just seems a little isolated up in the corner. Love the colours and texture of the water, the birds face is in shadow and lacks detail, it would have made such a difference if you had a catch light in the eye and a bit of detail there. Is the bird a bit soft?

    Thanks John-

    here’s another one-
the difficulty with the first is the lighting,
ideally I’d have had another Moorhen just out of shot holding the catchlight reflector,
but I was working alone yesterday-

    He (she) is sharp enough,
    probably sharper than this one-

ps, agree completely about the swan comments,
I wasn’t really setting out to capture swans yesterday-
and couldn’t hang around to wait for them to exude-

Ooops!! Caught me… Abstract is usually the last thread I check…so maybe I should check it more often if I am missing great shots like this…. 8)
