Can I use a D90 with this Lenses

    Hi,

I am wondering if the D90 could be used with the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm F2.8G ED VR II Lens, or is the Lenses too powerful for it? I am going to the States and thinking of buying a new lenses. Does anyone have any recommendations. It’s for Wildlife and Sporting photos.

    Thanks

    Paul

Its an AF-S lens and the D90 supports AF-S lenses so Yes in answer to your question…. I use my D70 with my 70-200 all the time…

…you can even use a 1957 Nikon body with that lenses if you can live with F2.8 throughout the zoom range and don’t mind manually focusing

Thanks Martin. When I say too powerful. I mean would the Camera body be able to cope with the lenses. The processor in the camera. I thought I might need a more powerful camera other than the Nikon D90. I was in Conn’s Camera shop looking at a serious lenses and they told me I would be better off using a different body as the D90 wouldn’t be fast enough to process the data from the lenses to the camera if I were to take sport shots.

The D90 can process anything coming back from the most expensive Nikon lenses. The D90 might not have the buffer or frame rate of more expensive bodies for sports but if your happy with the current frame rate and buffer provided by the D90 then work away… if not then think about upgrading the body also if you have the money…

    …even my old Nikon F4s handles e.g. the 24-70 AF-S just fine….

the remark from the sales man in conn’s camera is to make you feel your camera is not good enough in the hope you’ll spend a bucket load of cash on a new camera, as others have said the camera lens combo mentioned will work fine.

Nah, actually Dermot, I have found Conn’s Camera shop to be very helpful and honest. They actually saved me money on filters. They told me to go for the cheaper option. So I have to give credit where credit is due. Conn’s are pretty honest and very helpful.. Hope someone in Conn’s see this and gives me a discount. ha ha. Only joking. Thanks everyone for all your comments.

well I’ve never had problems with conns either they give me discounts on film most times I’m i with them, but at the same time the salesman is just that a salesman at the end of the day and if he can get you to upgrade your camera he’s gonna try I can’t think of any other reason for him telling you to use a different body otherwise.

IMO, but this is the biggest crap I’ve ever heard. How can people even think like that. Lens is just a light provider for camera.

a lens is far from just a light provider for the camera, especially with a lot of the more recent digi lens’ which have there own built in motors and gizmos, certain cameras wont work with certain lens’ as the camera needs the lens motor to auto focus. just for giggles here’s a link showing a nikon D3 with lens that’s been cut in half to show a cross section.
