Candid Portrait Shots

I’m fairly new to photography and would love some feedback on my shots. I’m using a Nikon D90, many of these shots were taken using the kit lens. I do not have a flash gun so the lighting isn’t great on some of the shots. All advice would be greatly appreciated.

shot 1
place the subject off-center can make the composition more dynamic and interesting to the eye, fill the frame.

shot 2
busy background, child is partly facing down, use natural light from large window instead of bedroom lamps.

shot 3
need to fill the frame, get down to child level, busy background, find somewhere that has very little distractions, grass line is cutting just above neck line, dont cut joints, eg knees, wrists. in saying that very cute

shot 4
get down low to child eye level.

shot 5
very cute and great smile, as above watch the background, use natural light from window, use pillows or a blanket to block out background.

nice set of shots
so just remember
1. get down low to child’s level
2. watch the background for distractions
3. don’t cut joints
4. use natural light when you can
5. get a prime lens, nikon 50mm 1.8, this will help to blur out the background

5. read manual 3 times and get into manual or aperture mode on your camera

Phillip,

Thanks a lot for the tips. The pictures on the bed were taken at night time so couldn’t use natural light but I can see how that would benefit the pictures. Am looking forward to putting the tips into practice. Thanks again.
