Candid shooting

Trying to get more into this side of photography… 1st one today. Took about 20 shots all in, here’s the best two.
Firstly, you should put these into the street section.
First one doesnt do it for me personally.
The second one is ok but I think if you had just altered the angle a bit you’d have a winner. By that I mean moving more to the right to get a bit more head on. And then a good mono conversion would finish it off nicely.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Sometimes it can be difficult to categorise images, especially people images. There are quite a number of categories where one could potentially put people images here – Street Photography, Fashion, Sports and of course People. My own approach is to put an image featuring people into the forum most suited to it. Do you put a an image of an athlete running the Dublin City Marathon in the Street, Sport, Fashion or People forum? It depends on the context of the image! One of the reasons I’ve not posted much recently is that I’ve found that there are too many people ready to jump up and say “Hey, you broke the rules!” (whether that be rules of photography or rules of the site or otherwise). I’m not willing to accept that, so I’m just going to post less for the moment.
I like these images particularly the second one. Personally I think people shots are best captured when the subject is unaware of the camera in the shot. The crispness is amazing – so much so that I’ve replied to one of the adds in the paper! :wink:
What equipment did you use, particularly in the lens area?
Body was a D80. Lens was nikkor 18-135mm
I was about 30ft away from him, maybe a little more.

I’ll buck the trend. I like the shot of the girl with the phone. A crop to get rid of some of the space on the right and bring the girls in the background more nto play would work better for me. She has a great expression (maybe a bit personal). I love anyone that hits the streets in the hope of catching a gem. Keep it up.

Well, these are pretty clearly “street” shots. Of course, having said that, the description of this section also mentions candid shots as well, so the confusion is understandable.
Personally, I like the picture of the girl as well. Just something about her shot clicks with me, I don’t know why.

Agreed. But saying something like “I would suggest putting these into the street section because…” (and give your reasons) sounds just so much better than “you should…” Or am i being over-sensitive?
I like the first shot. I might crop it a little to get rid of some of the cluttler though.
The second shot does suffer a little from your position but that is just something that
will get better the more shots you take. Pretty soon you will be walking straight up to him and asking can you
take his picture.

You can generally tell just by looking at someone whether they are just going to say “no thanks” or if they are going to get
all shirty about it. Most people I have asked seem genuinely flattered by the idea. Obviously I would always steer clear of the usual
junkies and scumbags but in general people are fine. The only problem i have found is that some people completely change when you put the
camera on them, it’s hard to tell a complete stranger
“when you sit like that you have a double chin, lean forward you look better that way”.
